Athens defeated Wellston last night 82 to 7.

Up 55-7 at the half, the Bulldogs plunged on to score another 27 in a continuous run clocked second half. How impressive!

What did the boys from Wellston do to deserve that? I don't care if you have to take a knee three times and punt every time you take possession you just don't do that to another group of high school kids.

Athens' coaching staff should be ashamed of themselves but I suspect that's far from the case.

Their starting QB only plated a quarter, so there's only so much you can do.

Some teams would be more insulted if you just take a knee, there's no winning when it's that lopsided. If they had the scrubs in and Wellston still couldn't do anything about it, what else can be done?

You don't tell your kids, regardless of what string they are, to NOT go hard. Nothing to be ashamed of.

If a team I rooted for was playing someone and we were getting beat badly and a team took a knee or punted on say 3rd down, I'd be pissed. That's much more in your face then having backups running the ball.

When they're beating the brakes off of Dover in the playoffs maybe you can ask them to take a knee. Is Dover taking a knee and punting when they hang 60+ on Toledo Waite or Toledo Woodward?

The thing here is that Athens has been playing Wellston for a long time. If you think that this was rubbing it in, in 1920 Athens beat Wellston 127-7. Unfortunately teams are just mismatched. Someday Athens may get hammered too. Athens has been scoring a lot of points for a long time. This year they are averaging over 50 points a game.

Is Dover taking a knee and punting when they hang 60+ on Toledo Waite or Toledo Woodward? Second time we played Woodward - I believe it was the 3rd quarter - Dover punt returner caught the ball on our own 35-40 -no fair catch signal, no Woodward players near by - just immediately took a knee. That obviously came at the direction of the coaching staff - nothing wrong with that. This year, with the continuous run clock rule, outrageous scoring is far simpler to avoid (if you care to do so!). When holding a decisive lead, Dover frequently 'takes a knee" to end drives/games where yet another score would be easy. These are usually executed by 3rd string players who would no doubt enjoy the opportunity to score but also appreciate the necessity to not.
