I like to use win shares and win shares per 48 minutes as my value comparison, much like I look at xFIP for pitchers and WRC+ for batters. VORP is decent, but like WAR, I don't like the comparison to replacement level players.
Basketball has more of the eye test involved than baseball though, for as much of a cop out as that is. Baseball is on a whole different level of independence as opposed to the interdependence of the NBA in terms of how players work together and how stats don't tell the whole story.
You gave a great example of my point. The stats for Pau and Marc may look similar, but one is the focal point of both the offense and defense and the other is a cog in an incredibly well oiled machine.
