Indians are apparently interested in Alex Rios. The Rangers are reported to be willing to include cash in the deal.

The bottom line is selling the future or anything for that matter to find someone to put the team over the top is silly. What will put the team in the playoffs is the performance of the current roster.

Obviously A. Cab isn't part of the future and it doesn't look like Masterson is as of now. I don't know what the Giants are offering but it can't be enough to turn this team into a pennant champion contender.

It's about the guys on the roster right now. It has to be or no trade deal will really matter.

Masterson dealt to St. Louis. Tribe gets one of their top prospects, OF James Ramsey (24 y/o, 1st rounder in 2012).

....and the Tribe acquires a pretty decent prospect in return....The cards #1 pick in 2012....James Ramsey, 24 yrs old outfielder at AA ball . Some pop in the bat, 13 HRs in 280 plate appearances..

Hopefully this trade works out as well as the last time we sent a mediocre pitcher to St Louis.

If you read the Cardinal fan comments on that article, they are quite underwhelmed. Masterson was walking anyway at the end of this year...why not take a chance on a guy? Masterson was a negative WAR pitcher all year so not only was he not winning the team games, he was worse than a replacement level starter.

The Cards are stuck in a place, like the Reds (but better) where they are riddled with injuries and have a lot of holes. They needed to really decide if contending was gonna happen, and if you, you have to buy. They have Kelly, Wacha and Garcia, all relatively cheap AND good, done for the year. They also have holes offensively, but limited resources outside of 3 or 4 highly-touted position players (Ramsey included) to trade.

Luckily, the Reds can sell because they are officially done. The Cards gave up a lot for a rent-a-player, for sure.

I'm shocked they(the Cards) gave up that much for a guy with so many questions marks...and a free agent to boot.

There are some negatives for the Tribe, and you can be the judge in your own mind whether they actually matter.

1) probably the only real chance the team had at a post season run was if Masterson returned to form and gave the team a solid #2 starter.

2) The Tribe loses the ability to make a qualifying offer to Masterson in attempt to keep him an additional year( or get a #1 draft pick).the cost of that offer would be in the $15 million range. Probably, the team would not make that offer given how Masterson has pitched this year.

Kluber was phenomenal. First pitcher since 1914 with consecutive complete games facing only 28 batters.

^^^^ in addition to that amazing stat, Hernandez set a major league record for consecutive starts with 2 or less runs given up.

Of note is that King Felix extended his streak of consecutive games of going 7 innings and allowing 2 runs or less. Only Tom Seaver has matched that feat in the history of baseball I think tonight makes it 14 games in a row.

A little surprised Bob Gibson, Whitey Ford or Sandy Koufax never achieved that. What makes it even more impressive for Felix is that he's done it against a league with a DH.
