I have heard from some recent nursing graduayes that they are having trouble find employment because hospitals are not hiring.....and I can remember a time when aerospace engineers were getting laid off by the tens of thousands. As I said earlier in this thread, I know a young man with a civil engineering degree from OSU that has been looking for 3+ years.

That said I think all professions go thru cycles, but you are certainly right that those on the 'low unemployment' part of the list stand a better chance of finding work in their field than some of the others....and that people need to consider employment outlook when choosing their field of study.
1. You have to know your market. Aerospace engineers go up and down with the US defense budget. That is the only real driver for the swings in aerospace.
2. Civil engineering is either the easiest or 2nd easiest since industrial engineering is up there with it. Due to this (no offense to those in the field) but on average the brightest don't go into it and typically there aren't nearly the number of jobs for civil as their are mechanical and electrical. That being said, 3+ years I dicates something else is "wrong" like he doesn't want to move, had terrible grades (assuming right out of school), is a terrible interviewer, or not REALLY looking. Even in today's market and even being a civil engineer, he is WELL outside the norm looking for 3+ years so therefore something else is definitely wrong with his situation.

My district here in suburban Houston just announced 50k for all first year teachers. Follow your passion. Don't chase the money. Word of advice: don't marry another teacher.

Unfortunately, the market is highly unpredictable. No matter which market one may be in -- granted there are probably a few that will always be around (healthcare, for example).

255 posts in and Boomers still giving advice that doesn't work in reality.

The best thing boomers can do to help young people is to RETIRE(or die preferably) and let the greatest generation clean up your mess.

Or you could just get 12 masters degrees and work as a retail salesperson in Kansas.

I can't believe I'm agreeing with Sleeper yet again. The reality is that in the Western world there aren't nearly enough positions for current graduates. I'm not sure how to fix it, but ignoring the problem isn't helping. Even in STEM fields there aren't enough jobs available for qualified Americans with such degrees. It seems as if Generation Y/Z/Millennials have tried to ride this problem out by staying in college longer and taking out more educational loans, but I'm not sure that is working. It just creates an industrial-education system that lives off of debt and government spending.

Haven't been on this thread for a while, but it appears one thing remains constant--your delusion. You're a boomer, sleeper, so why do you insist on misrepresenting yourself? I have to assume this is just a way of entertaining yourself..at least I hope that's all it is.

I'm pretty sure sleeper is 25-35, thus safely making him NOT a boomer.

I don't believe most anything he says about himself so no worries there.

Is he actually a branch campus grad? That's the absolute bottom of the barrel, below community college.

CASE, as in Case Western Reserve in Cleveland? You can't be serious if that is what you are talking about.

Well at least it's the best school in downtown Cleveland!

The trolling makes sense now that we know he isn't a real tOSU grad.

Does it matter where sleeper graduated from? For the past 5 years we've been saturated by random Kellogg MBA and UVA law graduates begging for an internship - paying or not paying just to have something on their resume.

And most of my sister-in-law's class that have Cambridge, Oxford, and St Andrews degrees are looking for any type of work.

The reality is the job market just doesn't suck, it manages to suck and blow at the same time.

CASE; the greatest school in Ohio that no one outside of Ohio has heard of. Sounds legit.

The reality is, CASE makes a great backup school for coddled rich kids that couldn't get into a real school so they go to some branded Ohio private school that no one outside of the state has heard of.

I know I've said this countless times before, but I actually know sleeper, and none of that is true. He doesn't need me to defend him, but I am not one to sit by and not correct misinformation.

"CASE; the greatest school in Ohio that no one outside of Ohio has heard of."

CASE has a very good engineering school, nearly rivals that of OSU. Its "law school" needs to be shut down. A complete joke.

You don't have to. But I don't think I have a reputation for lying on here, so you really have zero reason to distrust me.

The dude may troll in parts, but he's more knowledgable than 90% of the posters here. There are some things you can't BS. He just might be a bit less artistically competent about it.
