Seriously, if you are having car problems, type the problem into Google. 9/10 it'll be something like "Oh just replace such and such" that you can get for $5 at a auto-parts store and fix it yourself. Google pretty much eliminates the need for mechanics of any sort; at this point you are basically just paying money because you are lazy and/or want to transfer the risk of your maintenance to someone else(expensive!).

Sometimes. I'm definitely not the type to rush to the doctor any time I'm not feeling well and prefer to research symptoms/solutions on my own. And you probably saved good money doing it, as alternators are one of the easier items to replace on a vehicle. I looked it up on google to change it and, well, didnt quite want to do it so I decided to check the battery instead. It is one of those that is buried and you have to take it out and check it through the wheelwell.
Turns out...the batter was fucking shot. Bloated, still warm. Took it out, brought it to that place and asked for the guy she spoke to. He was just too fucking lazy to actually check the battery because it was too much work.
Fucking moron.

I have learned to do things from Google as well. I am about to change the fuel filter on my vehicle as we speak actually.
However my friend doing 10 dollar oil changes is too good of a deal and convenient to pass up.

I said 9/10. 9 times out of ten you can repair what is wrong with your car by yourself with a simple Google and a trip to the auto-parts store. Sleeper isn't off base with his comments. Most car issues can be fixed yourself if you've ever picked up a wrench in your life and have the slightest bit of reading comprehension. I've paid to get my vehicle worked on one time ever (alternator, which can easily be changed by yourself) and it's because the proper tools I needed were two hours away at home and it was an emergency.

I do my own oil changes and would not pay anyone for something I can do on my own and love to do.
My Powerstroke 7.3 takes 15 quarts (16 every other change when I drain the HPOP) of Rotella 15w40 with a Baldwin filter. The 5.9 Cummins takes 12 quarts of Rotella 15w40 with a Fleetguard Stratapore filter. The wifes Elantra takes 4 liters of Havoline 5w30 with a Hyundai OEM filter. I recycle the used oil as a form release mixing it with diesel fuel in my concrete buisiness.
