I've always thought that a situation like at the end of this game would be perfect for a pick off play with the runners going. I've never seen it tried.

just do the old step and throw to third like a lefty does to first. but I am sure Santana would screw it up and 3 runs would score.

^^^There is a high risk when you start throwing the ball around....things can happen and most aren't good. Statistically you are better off just trying to get the batter.
The other thing that happens is that you would have to have your first baseman be in a correct position to get the throw and apply the tag...and that would be pretty hard to disguise and again, would involve some risk.
Next time, note the position of the first baseman in that situation. Last nite, Swish was 20 feet behind the runner on the cut of the outfield grass on the line....in "no doubles" defense.

That is the reason why you never see the pros try to pick someone off third....because if the ball hits the runner, glances off a glove, or goes sailing errantly into foul teritory or left field, a run is SURE to score.
This kind of play is even riskier in lower leagues.
As a coach, sure as hell I'd have some hotshot catcher who wants to show off and pick somebody off third.....we'd have 'words':RpS_angry:

Axford has been pulled from the closer role. Allen I'm sure will get the nod

Good^^^. Axford had already cost Kluber 2 victories with blown saves...last nite would have been the 3rd.

Yep. We all knew he would be up and down all year. Hoping he would have more ups than downs, and so far, its been better than I expected. Hope it continues.

5-0 B6.

ZMac went 4.1, gave up 8 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 2 K

Really just didnt fool anybody.

Indians have had some opportunities, but continue to struggle to capitalize.

7-0 now. Outman got into trouble and Carrasco came in and allowed 2 inherited runners to score.

The Indians have 1 hit through 7.

They said on the radio tonight its the 20th time in 37 games we have scored 3 runs or less.

That's just not going to cut it, even with starting pitching that has been above average thus far on the whole.

Announcers on FS1 said that Tito told them it will be closer by committee and it will not be handed to anyone in particular at this point. Scrabble, Allen, Shaw or Acthison could all get the ball depending on the situation.

They were saying the same thing on the radio.

I actually think of that group Allen would make a really good regular closer.

I kind of hate the "by committee" approach because it brings some ambiguity to everyone's role's as no one knows from one night to the next who is closing and what they should expect for themselves. Baseball players are creatures of habit, and not knowing from one night to the next if they will be closing, long relief or whatnot ends up usually not working out.

I don't understand why they just don't put Allen there right now as he'll be there next year for sure. With Axford having only a 1 year deal with no options, he's sure to be gone next year either by the Tribe cutting him loose because he stinks, or thru free agency if he does well and re-establishes himself. I'm not sure what his role would be with the Tribe if he does not regain the closer role.

Probably what "closer by comittee" means is that they are going to give Axford a chance to regain the spot if he pitches well...so they don't want to give Allen the role and then take it away.

Allen will get the ball the 1st chance and as long as he doesn't suck it up, he will be our closer until he leavs for
more money in FA. I don't but the by committee for a second.

^^^knowing how the F.O. operates, I bet they don't make him "closer" too soon as it may cost them more money when he gets to arbitration years.
