Not saying he is bad or anything, but do any group of athletes get more overhyped than the late signings and transfers? Schools panic at the lose of players and totally reach 90% of the time on guys like this.
Possibly true, but if Duke's past transfers are any indication, K doesn't just take anyone. The only transfers he has accepted at Duke are Roshown McLeod, Dahntay Jones, Seth Curry and Rodney Hood (all were All-ACC at Duke). He seems to do his homework. Either way, a 6-9, 265-pound big man who is a proven defender and rebounder -- even from a smaller conference -- is still a pretty good snag for a team coming off a season where it had almost no traditional size inside (and may not have much in 2015-16 depending on who leaves). As a transfer, Obi will also have to sit out a year, which will give the kid time to acclimate to the Duke system and improve in practice going against top competition.
Whether he ever turns into a star or not, size is something that can't be taught, so I'll trust the Duke staff evaluated Obi properly before signing him.
