"Sansa is still in book 3. I know some people like Reek/Theon but I find it to be torture porn, and the rest of books 4/5 would be unwatchable. No one is going to care about random quests that go nowhere." from the TV show only thread.
Some of 4/5 have to happen though. Sansa will be into book 4/5 after the next episode by the looks of it. She needs her political scheming lessons from Littlefinger. Arya needs her Faceless Man training. Bran needs his how-to-be-a-tree lessons from Bloodraven. That actor has been cast and will be in ep 10 reportedly. And someone has been cast for a Children of the Forrest role. After Tywin takes his final crap Tryion and banished-from-the-friend-zone Jorah have to get to Mareen. Dany gets a dragon ride and a showdown (or what looks to be a GI Jane moment with Khal Jhago. With Drogon she has the biggest **** in Essos). Jon needs elected Lord Commander and Ceasered. Without these things alone the events of books 6/7 cannot happen.
Do you really see them cutting Cersei vs. Marg? Lena Headley has been told the walk of shame is coming. Marg will have her trial. No way they'll pass up showing her losing her head if found guilty.
The Battle of Mareen is looming before Dany takes off for Westeros. Throw in Stannis vs. Bolton too.
Now all that craptastic Ironborn stuff? That can be cut way back along with a good chunk of the Dorne stuff. I doubt Sam goes to Oldtown in the show either. Maybe they'll just send him to a library in Bravos instead.
To put all that plus the events of the final(I hope) two books into 20 episodes? No way.
At that rate you might as well just pull a Newhart and have Ned wake up next to Cat and say "I had the strangest dream"

it might take a few extra-long episodes, but [no spoilers] people aren't going to care about the iron Born and Dorne with a dozen new characters that do nothing. Likely the producers will do something with the already established characters that GRRM mangled.

Aren't the ones important are those that live? They introduced two new characters this season, Oberyn and Mace - and Mace just sits around. There is no, and I mean no, way they could possibly introduce Connington, Aegon, Darkstar, Oakheart, 4 (count them 4) sandsnakes, Aeron, Victarion, Euron, the chick on the boat with Connington, the people in Braavos no one cares about, the people in Meereen no one cares about, Quentyn (the worst character ever), the people with Quentyn, the tattered Prince and his cast of idiots, Brown Ben and his sellswords who no nobody cares about without the series being cancelled. No one is going to watch Brienne travel for 2 years to look for Sansa when everyone knows she won't find her. Terrible writing, like the last two books.TedSheckler;1615856 wrote:LOL. Work with what you have, Jon, Tyrion and Dany come together, and let Arya/Brienne or both, find Sansa and just ignore the last two lame books of Brienne looking for a maiden of 10 and four everywhere other than where she is and Tyrion asking where whores go with no resolution in sight.

I'm excited to see Tyrion kill Tywin and Shae.
And I agree that they need to stick with what they have already. I think the best storylines from here on out are Sansa's at the Eyrie and Arya's when she gets to Braavos and joins the House of the Many Faced God.

Your first paragraph is something I was thinking about yesterday. This will be a very interesting transition period for the show, where they'll have to be very careful to maintain their audience. They've lost one great hate-sink villain in Joffrey. Tywin is about to join him, Sandor is about to enter the dead/not dead twilight zone where people will wonder if he's a mysterious limping gravedigger who was seen once by Brianne and so on. Meanwhile, while those popular characters are dying or fading into the sunset, fans will be asked to care about Ironborn succession ceremonies, Dornish conspiracies and other world-building exercises that basically take them away from everything they enjoyed about the show. Where the main interesting things will be what goes on at the Wall with Jon/Stannis and the Wildlings and uh...Cersei's growing paranoia? Jaime besieging Edmure Tully's home? Brianne's fateful encounter with the Brotherhood Without Banners? Arya learning to become an assassin and then killing all sorts of minor characters who probably never were adapted to the show to begin with? Oh..and Littlefinger and Varys being a pair of motherfucking bosses.Manhattan Buckeye;1616096 wrote:Aren't the ones important are those that live? A lot of those new characters would only be on the show when absolutely needed. Euron for example, he'd simply replace Balon who has appeared in what? 3 episodes? You could do one scene with him sending Vic and the dragon horn and then he'd disappear until season 6 and Vic wouldn't show up again until the battle of Meereen. Qyentyn doesn't need to appear on screen until he walks into Dany's throne room and gets shot down. 1 episode later he could show up at the Dragon jail and pick up his Darwin Award. Darkstar and Oakhart could be cut down to one scene (prologue of season 5?) that could be followed shortly by Doran busting Arianne for the Myracella crowning plot and telling her he sent Quentyn east. No need for scenes locking up sandsnakes . Who cares what sellsword company Tyrion joins and turns? We don't have to care about who leads it. Did anyone really care about the slave master who got Dracary'ed ? No.Manhattan Buckeye;1616096 wrote:Aren't the ones important are those that live? And caring about chick on the boat would be like caring about Bus Passenger #4 in Speed. lol
The general consensus I've seen on other boards is that AFFC and ADWD are gonna get boiled down to the bare essentials for anyone new except maybe Aegon.
Tryion's boat ride/journey to Dany might last 10 episodes. (my bet is they meet in ep 10 putting him in Meereen in ep 6 or 7) But won't seem as bad cause he's been whitewashed on the show and they wont make him as dark as GRRM did. I don't even think they'll have him kill Shae on the show. Tywin will, giving Tryion justification. We won't hear him say he wants to rape cersei and tv viewers will not hear "where do whores go" 187 times like the readers had to endure.
And viewers will be very interested in Brienne once she meets undead Cat. TV only viewers will eat that up. They want Freys to pay for the Red Wedding in the worst way.

Ressurected by the Brotherhood. Lord Beric, the guy who fought the Hound in the cave, gives up his life to do so.

They call her Lady Stoneheart.
If I remember correctly, she has no memory of the past. Brienne is about to be hanged and Lady Stoneheart stops that's, but has no previous memory of Brienne.

As I recall, she was dead too long to retain much of her humanity. All she really remembers is that the Lannisters and Freys must die for what they did to her family and so she kills them and their allies. Brianne was on the "do what I say or die" list because, in part, her sword was one of the two Tywin used Ned's greatsword to forge.TedSheckler;1616856 wrote:They call her Lady Stoneheart.

According to imdb a Braavosi Captain has been cast and will be appearing in episode 10. Guess who's going to Braavos?Manhattan Buckeye;1616096 wrote:Aren't the ones important are those that live? Ugh, hopefully it will be just a couple of episodes. The show can't handle 4-5 arcs in Essos where nothing happens. People are bored with it now.

They are jumping way ahead if Arya is going to Braavos already. It seems as though The Hound is going to die in the next couple episodes. I enjoyed Arya's story in Braavos. From joining the House of many faces, to losing her sight, and then learning to become an assassin. It intrigued me.
What will be boring is when Tyrion takes off to go to follow Daenerys.

I'm sure HBO can get at least a season out of Tyrion describing the turtles he sees. God the 5th book sucked.TedSheckler;1617892 wrote:They are jumping way ahead if Arya is going to Braavos already. Not really, its pretty much right on time. AFFC/ADWD were really just one big book. It'll be much more bearable on screen because they'll be able to slice and dice so much of it. A lot of Cercei's and Tyrion's arcs were inside their heads for example. Like I said, "where do whores go?" wont be heard 187 times if at all. "You know nothing, Jon Snow" was in the books way more than the show.TedSheckler;1617892 wrote:They are jumping way ahead if Arya is going to Braavos already. And Sansa is now into AFFC and by the end of this season will be out of released book material altogether. She'll be into Winds of Winter stuff or they'll be inventing show-only material.

There are a few things that are interesting about the last two books:
-Cersei's comeuppance
-The Manderly's
- To some people, lady stoneheart.
the rest is an absolute disaster. Jaime does nothing. Tyrion wanders around and does nothing. Dany sits and does nothing until Quentyn arrives and she leaves. GRRM crapped the bed writing this.

And just like that Sansa has moved beyond GRRM's published material. They might go back and pick up a few leftover bits and pieces but from the sound of things its either Winds of Winter or filler material until everyone else catches up to her.

The show has to move behind GRRM's material. It has about two seasons left in it or else people will get bored. No one wants to see Dany going back to the Red Waste with only one dragon, Tyrion turning into a little girl and Jon being a complete idiot while running the Night's Watch. At times I wonder if someone else wrote the past two books.
- oh, and the 20+ other plot pieces left unresolved, and Brienne in her never-ending quest when we know that she's never anywhere close to Sansa.

I'd be interested in seeing what they have for Brianne, since a lot of her quest is pretty much a no-go for the series. The Mummers aren't in the show, so her encounter with Shagwell and company can't happen. And Rorge/Biter fell to Sandor/Arya, so she can't fight them. So, that leaves what. Aimless wandering and then running into the Brotherhood Without Banners?Manhattan Buckeye;1621751 wrote:The show has to move behind GRRM's material.
