There is no 'Best in the Country" Hell, the guy who coached Mercer this might be the better than most.

Tom Izzo has had plenty of talent to work with compared to most schools. Duke and Carolina are who they are and of course attract insane amounts of Mickey Ds, but that's far from the norm. For example, Florida has just 11 of them since 2000. Two titles for Billy D.

Tom Izzo is a great coach. Not the best in the country. A 1-5 record of winning it all at the Final Four is just not that great.
Out of six times, how many times did he get to the championship? Is he worse than .500 winning the first game?

Been to the championship game twice. 1 for 2.

So yes, 2-4 in Final Four games.

Good Mercer reference.

I do agree with you, though, about there not really being a "greatest" coach out there (it's way to subjective a topic), which is what makes it so bizarre any time anyone here claims Izzo is that coach. His record at the Final Four just doesn't stack up.

That argument gets obliterated is MSU wins the championship this year - then Izzo would have 2 titles to go with 7 Final 4 appearances, matching Pitino and Williams, among others.

As I said in my first post about this, if Izzo wins another title this year, then I will include him in that conversation. As of the moment, he's great, but not as legendary as he is often made out to be.

I'm just not seeing a statistically significant difference between 2 titles in 7 Final Four trips and 1 title.

If you want to say he has just 1 title instead of 2-3, then maybe. But 6 Final Four trips DOES NOT support your argument, even if he only has 1 win.

You can't see the significance of 2 titles over 1?

It sort of does when Izzo is constantly praised for how he has gotten every recruiting class he has coached to the Final Four (assuming Michigan State advances there this year), despite only the one title. I just want to see him prove he can win it all again before bestowing him holy status. His only championship was 15 seasons ago.

Not many coaches have won 2. When you reach that mark, that is legendary.

This.

There are only 14 coaches with multiple titles. There are 33 who have 1.

And honestly, it's only 13. Because Wooden has 10. NO ONE will ever get close to 10.

Dayton hanging tough, but it may be too little, too late.

Statistical significance, yes. 2 in 7 is not a statistically significant difference from 1/6 or 1/7

2 > 1.

That is literally all that matters in this discussion.

Sibert 0 for 3 in the first half with zero attempts in the second half...wow.

Pretty much the only reason I know he's out there is because he lost a shoe a while back.

If MSU wins the title this year, it will show how stupid your argument is because he's still the same coach 2 weeks from now.

The point I was making is if Pitino and Williams only have 2 titles in 7 trips...then it kind of tells you it's REALLY hard to win the title. While 33 coaches might have 1 title, how many of those have been to 6+ Final Fours?

If you want to look at a guy's career and say 1 title doesn't cut it, that's fine. But 6 Final Fours doesn't help your case, it puts him in elite company.

Lol do you realize how wrong you are? There is a huge difference in 2 titles over 1, yet if izzo wins his second this year he's the same? Maybe coaching wise. But in college basketball history he took a huge leap.

Dayton getting absolutely no calls down the stretch. Would make it especially great to see them pull of a miracle comeback and take down Florida. Flyers hanging around, but time is running out.

Yeah there wasn't much of a foul on that board. More of a travel for falling to the floor.
