Then I think you can bring a wad of cash and get a car listed over what you have. Most people privately selling won't turn down 13k right then in the hopes someone comes around with more.

No doubt.
Plus, and I thought it would be the opposite, at dealerships they dont particularly care for a full cash payment as they can get kickbacks from banks on the interest.

yes - wad of cash really only works on private sellers. Also - bring it in smaller bills so it looks more impressive.

I drive a Honda CRV, which has AWD. I really like it, so I can only assume a Subaru would handle greatly, especially in snow.

Parents bought an Outback a year ago. It's their favorite car of the many they have owned.

Outback is possibly a Lezmobile - I'd go Impreza hatch or legacy.
agree with everything but the "lezmobile" part.... Best AWD system out there, great in snow, last for years, 200k-300k miles with the Outbacks and Foresters. I can't vouch for the Impreza which is considerably a cheaper model.

13k? Good luck.... Maybe a 4 year old model if you want something more than stripped.

testimonial.... My parents have had 3 over the past 21 years. They drove it for 6 years before giving it to my sister who drove it for another 6. Same with Outback # 2... Mom's had the latest 7 years now. I drove my Dad to the Emergency room in it in a terrible snowstorm, there were cars and trucks all over the place in ditches. That Subaru tracked straight and true and solid. The next car I bought was a Subaru... That's thee only car I want my family traveling in bad weather.

I take it you didn't look at the links I posted? I'm fine with a 2002 if I find one I like.

My fiance's family had an older version of that car, and they enjoyed it.

They did small-league "picking" and auction stuff, it was great for them to haul junk in.. and it was reliable. They finally got rid of in in 2012, but it held up well.
