Obviously. After looking through all the pictures on the link it now looks as if that's not a separate structure and it's a wing.

Downer...

Damn. That sucks.

Is it kind of cool to see the flag still flying with the house just burnt all around it.

Is that a castle-styled defense tower in photo No. 5 of the slideshow? Is the owner a fucking squire. My lord that house is/was cool. A damn shame. I imagine these people will land on their feet soon enough, though. Still sucks.

A house that large and nobody was home? C'mon this has insurance arson all over it, rich people didn't get that way for being stupid.

It does seem shocking to have such a complete and total destruction from fire in this day and age (older home or not). Rich people still go bankrupt, too...and often people are completely clueless (even spouses) as to the extent of financial trouble.

Or maybe the arctic freeze, followed by heat wave, caused a gas line to burst :)

Yeah...global warming will do that.

I'd agree that it seems extremely suspicious that this house is such a complete loss.

My guess is that this house had an elaborate alarm system installed. Clearly the fire was raging for some time before emergency personnel arrived on scene.

I have a hunch this family was in way over their heads financially.

I'm not going to speculate on a cause, but I highly doubt these people did this on purpose. The wife is out of town and apparently the dad was so distraught last night that the son still in high school wasn't able to leave his side. The dad is a builder and built the house himself.

You would also think he'd have grabbed the family dogs before setting the house on fire.
