My wife has a brother, 2 sisters, and a mom and dad.
Her brother is a good guy for the most part. He's a know it all (doesn't really know anything but acts like he does) so it's a little annoying sometimes, but not unbearable. Her sisters I get along with well. Her parents... Well... Her dad could be ok if he wasn't a pushover for her mother. But her mother is idiotic and unbearable. I've always laughed it off when people talk about relationships with mother in laws, but I totally get it now. It's at a point where I prefer not to be around them.
Do any of you have this kind of relationship with your in laws?

Family is pretty important to me, so I doubt I'd marry a woman if I didn't get along with her family.

Hope this helps.

My mother in law adores me, they are easy to get along with. Actually stayed a few months with them during our move from one house to another.

Let me just give 2 examples today alone that shows what type of person my mother in law is. She literally has the mentality of a 13 year old.

So my wife and I went out with my family Friday after thanksgiving. My parents offered to have my son spend the night so we didn't have to come back early. My wife tells her mother today how our son did really well with my parents overnight ... She gets offended and goes "he spent the night with them before us?!?!! I'm your mother, you trust your mother in law over me?!?" While in standing there mind you lol

So to get back at us she calls tonight to say she can't take our son to his doctors appt to get his shots bc she doesn't want him to associate them with pain. I have to work tomorrow to get caught up on some projects, and now I have to call people I work with at 9:30pm and tell them I'm balling on them

Not technically my in-laws, but my girlfriend's parents are awesome. Two of the best people I have met.

My future in-laws (we're getting married in April) are pretty cool. Her dad was all-state basketball player in Ohio, and pretty much a sports nut so we get along really well. Her mom is very sweet and her brother is just a regular dude.

My ex-gf.. her family was awkward, barely spoke to me in the 5 years we were together.. so this relationship is a breath of fresh air.

Yeah my in laws love me and my wife's brother and sister are pretty cool too. I already knew her older sister due to hanging out with mutual friends before I ever met my wife.

Funny story when me and my wife first started dating after about a month or so we got into a fight and she broke up with me... When she told her mom about it her mom actually cried a little and just asked her why she would break up with me. So we always joke around how my wife's mom loves me more than her. Her dad is a pretty cool guy as well we don't have a lot in common but still always find stuff to talk about.

Someone could line my mother in law, father in law, brother in law, and my wifes grandmother up and put a bullet between their eyes and it might put a smile on me. They are absolutely worthless. My sister in law and they rest of her family is cool as fuck, and we get along great. Those 4 though, I have nothing to do with unless I have to.

My wife's parents are great. Her brother is a good guy too, but we are the same age and back in the day he used to get a little of my sloppy seconds. Still resents me a little, but hey, we are Eskimo brothers. HAHA!

After seeing what my brother went through almost 8 years ago, I vowed never to have in-laws like he has.

My in-laws are awesome. I couldn't ask for better ones. I think my wife would say the same.

I love my mother-in-law and stepfather-in-law but don't always like them when they are together, even though they've been married nearly 25 years. My wife is constantly worrying they'll get divorced because they are so combative and stubborn around each other which makes for tense family dinners - it didn't help that they just visited for 2 weeks and after the 5th dinner out I told my wife to say something to them before they ruin Thanksgiving. We've actually considered suggesting therapy for them because together they emanate stress and anxiety - yet alone each of them is fine.

My sister-in-law is our goddaughter, and we consider her our daughter.

Early on in our marriage the wife and I set our standards about the family, holiday schedule, vacation and other family events. We both agreed that with kids we have to start our tradition. One rule was that parents would not be used as a support, baby setting, day care, over night or appointments.... We didn't make the in laws feel like we where rejecting them but didnt want the jealous aspect to start. After a few years and the kids where older the in laws would offered to help and where more open to take the kids. Now it wasn't an obligation but more of a good will. The in laws had the option to help or not.... Wife and I where off the hook.... We never ask for help it was now offered..

It is very important to keep a relationship with the in laws but don't let them stand between you and you wife over minor issues. Communication between you and your wife about how the in laws are acting is a fine line but it does have to be addressed but not harped on.

They are just pieces of shit. Her mom's a lazy ass **** who hasn't worked a job in 15 years, so her dad has to work all the overtime he can to afford shit. Her dad's a drunk, of course, being married to that bitch, I'd need to be drunk all the time too. Her grandma is a two faced bitch that things the world revolves around her. She's expects every one to drop what they are doing whenever she needs anything, but refuses to do anything for anyone else.

Me and her dad has come to fists a couple of times. It's really her stepdad. Her real dad died when she was just a baby. When her stepdad gets drunk, he will start saying shit to her about her dad, just trying to be hurtful, so I've had to shut him up a few times.

They all think it should be all about them. They don't understand I have family too that live two and a half hours away. We enjoy spending holidays with my family as well. We try to alternate holidays between families annually, but thats not good enough for them. So after years of all their bullshit, I've just had enough.

I hate to say that, but sometimes I'm more comfortable with my in laws.

Having a good relationship with your in laws can be a plus for a marraige and the converse is true too.... it can put a lot of strain on a marraige if families don't get along.
