Doesn't matter, 20% of the actual bill/service, not 20% of the bill/service PLUS the taxes.

I mean personally I don't worry about it and I just tip off of the total, but you really don't have to tip off anything but the total before taxes.

The server pays taxes on 10% of their total sales (If a server sells $1000 in an evening, the government assumes they make $100 in tips and they get taxes on that. Honest servers claim their whole tips regardless). The taxes are based off sales not sales+tax.

So they most certainly did tip 20%.

I'm shocked, shocked that this is another fake "crime/discrimination story". Of course I already got a dozen or so FB updates of friends outraged about the discrimination involved.

"would you do what she did?"

Because the story went viral and supposedly people sent her a lot of money.

Totally agree!!!! In some ares if you add up state and city sales tax it can exceed well over 10%. You don't tip on tax.

That's a tid bit of information that people don't realize about servers.

Servers make $2.13/hr.
Servers are taxes on $2.13/hr plus their tips. Their tips are taxed based on what they claim, but they have to claim a minimum of 10% of their sales.

So, if they make less than 10% tips, they are taxed on money they didn't actually make.

Also, even if they have a short shift and/or they don't make anything, they have to claim enough tips that would make them equal to normal minimum wage, so again, they are taxed on money they didn't actually make.

Most night shifts these things aren't a problem, its day/lunch shifts and late night diners, etc they can run into these problems.

I waited for about 4 years (all 4 in college), and I am not complaining about the money, if you don't suck at it you can make $15/hr which is darn good for a college kid.

Damn. I was going to post this.

10% of $93.55 = $9.355

$9.355*2 = $18.71

Restaurant or bar will cover the gap if you make less than minimum wage after tips.

If you don't like getting stiffed on a tip or complain about how bad people tip, find a job that's not based on the kindness of others.

Apparently all the money sent was donated to charity.

That said, if she did fake this she is a scumbag.

It's hard to believe she did it.

I'm thinking this started out with her seeking attention on FB, and then snowballed from there. The media starts calling well, hey, more attention!

And after even a few weeks, who would ever expect someone to come forward with the actual receipt from a family meal? Now maybe I'd be far more interested in the story after I saw it's a restaurant I eat at. But even then, hard to imagine scrutinizing the receipt to that level of detail...and then remembering enough about my meal a few months earlier to be motivated to track down my receipt.

It kind of looks like they left that first statement behind - that first bill you get before giving your credit card.

Normally you take that with you, but it's not going to have a tip/total/signature...which makes it an ideal candidate for a waitress to use to fake a story.

Oh Christ, the waitress did this and posted it on FB to extract money from stupid people. You can tell she knows it based on the interview where she tries to be aloof regarding the allegation; her mind is fighting with itself. What a fraud.
