So my gf has always had dogs as a pet, and ice had both. We live in an apt complex with no close dog parks so a dog is pretty much out (plus I don't want to walk it in the am when it's 0 degrees out). We have been thinking about getting a cat instead, but my gf is still not sure. Anyone on here have cats and opinions on owning a cat?

We have 3. I have always hated cats, plus I am allergic to them. Not all cats bother me, but most do. Our 3 do not however and it would be very weird around here without them. They are easy to care for, easier than dogs.

I have two. They're cool. Easy to take care of and they tend to be happy as long as they can curl on a lap during the winter (or really, any time, but no damn way I want a 20-pound ball of fur on top of me when it's 90 out.

They work out great with my life. Independent enough that I don't feel bad about them being at home when I'm out at friends or at work and they're friendly enough to provide amusement when I'm at home.

Had two favorite pets growing up -- a chocolate lab and a really big fluffy cat. Since they were both outdoor pets, if I had to pick only one of them, I'd probably go with the dog as I could go ATV riding with her in our huge woods, which was always a lot of fun. She followed me around the trails all day long.

Indoor, however, I would go with a cat, no question. Cats are cool and laid back. They do shed fur, but they are self-sufficient and need little attention. Just make sure there is enough food and water and you can leave them alone for days. I hate kids and indoor dogs are like kids. That said, I am not really an animal in the house person, anyway.

Cats are great. You just have to be smarter than them sometimes and not let them outside.

I allowed my wife to have one last year. He's been a cool cat. He's around 1.5 years old.

Much, much, much easier than having a dog.

Cats would have a bounty on them if it weren't for spinster old ladies and Wildcats 20 & Heretic obviously.

They manipulate the internets with LOLs and act like assholes whenever it is Caturday. Don't let them eat your cheezburger.

Get a small dog. It'll get its exercise just putzing around the house.

Cats are much easier to care for than dogs.

A little food, water, and some play toys and you're good to go. Keep the litter box scoped every day and change the litter completely at least once a week. You can leave them alone for a few days as long as food and water are available.

Do not over-feed or they get obese and develop urination issues. Cat urine is a gawd awful smell.

But cats are very independent and hilarious animals. The perfect pet for apartment living. DO NOT let them become outside cats. I also recommend a de-clawing if they are inside pets.

Good post. We have a cat, and agree with all of the above...along with having them spayed or neutered as well.

I have a cat and she's awesome. I suggest adopting a cat from a shelter. It'll come with shots, fixed, you'll be able to hand-pick one that fits your personality, and you'll get the satisfaction of saving a cats life.

I adopted mine when she was ~3 years old. She's pretty awesome.

I disagree with this. My cat is pretty good about not clawing stuff. She uses the carpet to sharpen her claws, but doesn't claw me or my furniture.

We didn't have a whole lot last year. She was struggling with me being gone and her not really having full-time employment. So it helped comfort her. It was a good move, regardless of our financial situation at the time.
