The more I look at it, the more on the bubble they should be. The Big Ten isn't good and just going around .500 or slightly over in the league won't carry you like year's past. Not saying they won't make it, but when you really look at them against other teams who don't have such a great "name", it's not close.

For instance...St. Mary's. A team everyone basically has out and with no chance after losing to Gonzaga last night.

OSU: 19-8, 98 SOS, 1-6 vs top 50, 4-7 vs top 100
SMC: 18-9, 99 SOS, 1-5 vs top 50, 2-5 vs top 100

Big difference in 18-9 in a major conference than in a mid major. Come on, that's always been the case.

Barring an 0-4 end to the regular season, OSU is not in any trouble.

Where did you pull those numbers from?

OSU has 3 top-50 RPI wins (Maryland, Indiana, Illinois) and 6 top 100.
St. Mary's has 0 top 50 wins, 2 top 100, and 2 sub-100 losses.

So either you're using something other than the RPI, or you weren't even close.

Not sure Iowa is considered a bad loss. They are sitting at 16-10 and above .500 in Big Ten. I realize they are not great, but they are not bad by any means. At time OSU played they, they were also top 25 team and playing pretty well. Now not so much. Joe Lunardi as of couple days ago, has Iowa in the NCAA currently. Bad loss was today certainly, to a .500 team that was missing best players to injury. Shitty loss honestly.

OSU is a bubble team and they deserve to be one.The only thing consistent thing about this team is their inconsistency.Russell had been the only reliable scorer and he is beginning to struggle as teams focus their defense directly at him. Apparently, Loving lost his shooting touch during his two week suspension.Amir Williams gets out played by every center he faces.A permanent benching should be in the future The free throw % was better today, but there were critical misses by Russell(why wasn't that a 2 shot foul) and Tate. Bates-Diop was the only other shining light and Thompson and Tate played OK.

I used KenPom. That and BPI are way more accurate than RPI. We all know RPI is garbage...

Why? The overall numbers are similar, and that includes conference games. Historically conference affiliation really doesn't give you much...

OSU was #17 in KenPom and #12 in BPI coming into today, so they'd still be nowhere near the bubble if the selection committee used either of those systems. Which they don't.

Because those formulas aren't ancient and take more into account than the location and opponent. OSU isn't going to be in the "safe zone" for the RPI when all said and done, they will actually probably be in the mid-40's.

We'll see how the next few weeks play out. A 3-1 stretch, they are solid. A 3-1, or even 2-2 stretch, but one of the wins being Wisconsin, they are solid. Anything less and they can't objectively not be in the bubble discussion.

Again, other than name recognition, perceived conference strength and history, what have they done?

Think the buckeyes biggest problem right now is a combination of how teams are guarding russell and that he is taking a lot of bad shots. He had those big games and the triple double and he was talked about by everyone nationally. He made the comments about he's not even at his best and feels like every day he's closer. Blah blah, I think it got to his head a little. Ever since then, he's forced some bad shots, had some turnovers and just not played that well. Osu doesn't win if he's not playing well. Just can't score enough without him.

More than teams like Stanford, Texas, Texas A&M, Georgia, UCLA, Pitt, NC State, or Purdue.

If you take them out, you have to put someone else in. And they are better on paper right now than at least 8 or 10 at-large teams that will be in the field.

Purdue, as much as it pains me, has been impressive since the start of conference play. Never thought they would even sniff a top 4 seed in the B1G.

But, I agree with your premise. I think Az is dismissing how bad the field is. I pointed it out when he though MSU might not make it and I'll point it out again. On paper, historically, OSU should be a bubble team. But, the field is so terrible that bubble teams become locks. OSU could still at themselves to the wrong side with a 2-2 finish and B1G Tourney loss in 1st game, but it's doubtful.

I do have to laugh at them going from a 4 seed (according to Az) to should be in, in a matter of about 5 games.

It is almost inexcusable how poor Scott and Thompson have been this season. These guys should be among the best players in the B1G, their failure to develop has really hampered this team

I'd argue those teams have all done as much or more. Are we talking name recognition or eye test? Or are we talking actual accomplishments. What accomplishments does OSU have? They basically haven't lost to anyone who sucks or been blown out...until yesterday.

And yes, you're both right, I haven't really gotten down to the bottom line of the bubble yet, but comparing OSU to other teams is fair.

Yes they did. First bad loss of the season, period. OSU is what they are. Not great, not bad. At any given time capable of playing with most teams. But inconsistant with effort, often. So spin it as you will, but right now, OSU is NOT a bubble team. I don't care what the stats say. YOu are selectively choosing the one that fits your argument as some of pointed out. Minus Wisky, yes the Big Ten is mediocre for the first time in a LONG while. But they will still probably get 7 teams in, definately 6. OSU "should" end up within that top 6,7. Are they on the cusp of the bubble after yesterday? Sure they are. By next Sunday we will know much more. They have two home games vs Neb. and then Purdue. They should take care of Nebraska and Purdue wont' be easy, but being a home game, they have the advantage obviously.
So it is what it is right now. But they really aren't a bubble team just yet.

The Purdue game will be big. It's one of those that's a bad loss if you lose at home, but a quality win if you take care of business.

Think it was 3 games which, like you said, is standard protocol in college basketball it seems.

In today's Columbus Dispatch Matta hinted at a line-up change. Given that Nebraska has no real size I hope Matta gives Bates-Diop more time at the expense of Amir Williams.
