Is on TNT right now. Fucking love this movie. A must watch for me whenever its on TV. I will probably be switching it between the Colts-Broncos game though.

Great movie. Joaquin Phoenix just might go down as one of the two or three greatest actors of his generation. A phenomenal talent. If I had to choose between him and Leo, I'm not sure whom I'd go with as my favorite actor. It's almost a toss up for me.

River Phoenix was better in Stand By Me.

Every time I hear Gladiator I think of a punch line a Man with hair between his teeth.

While you certainly present a well thought-out and reasoned argument, IMDb actually ranks Phoenix ahead of acting giants Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Forest Whitaker and Matt Damon on its list of 100 Greatest Actors of All-Time, at No. 59. He is without question one of the very best actors of his generation, and probably top five. His performance as Johnny Cash alone elevated him to legendary status.dlazz;1521240 wrote:

Yea. He made The Village an awesome movie. Top 5 movie of all time, for sure.

Yes, because Joaquin Phoenix's entire career is based on The Village.TedSheckler;1521264 wrote:Yea. He made The Village an awesome movie. Top 5 movie of all time, for sure.

Dude, you're forgetting about Ladder 49. Such a masterpiece. People have been talking about that one since it came out.TedSheckler;1521264 wrote:Yea. He made The Village an awesome movie. Top 5 movie of all time, for sure.

Nor should it be based solely on Gladiator and Walk the Line.reclegend22;1521280 wrote:Yes, because Joaquin Phoenix's entire career is based on The Village.

You rely on critical reviews of Eminem's career to form the conclusion that Eminem has sucked since 2002, yet fail to recognize the critically-acclaimed reviews of Joaquin Phoenix's career based on just not wanting to. Got it.dlazz;1521282 wrote:Dude, you're forgetting about Ladder 49. Such a masterpiece. People have been talking about that one since it came out.

I didn't rely on critical reviews to form that opinion, I relied on my ability to listen to music and deduce that his quality tapered off. I used critical reviews to drive the point home that I wasn't the only one who felt this way.reclegend22;1521288 wrote:You rely on critical reviews of Eminem's career to form the conclusion that Eminem has sucked since 2002, yet fail to recognize the critically-acclaimed reviews of Joaquin Phoenix's career based on just not wanting to. Joaquin on the other hand has been average from the get-go, with an exception on Walk the Line which was an meh movie.

Ahh, yea. Forgot about that one. I can't believe he wasn't nominated for a Golden Globe for that.dlazz;1521282 wrote:Dude, you're forgetting about Ladder 49. Such a masterpiece. People have been talking about that one since it came out.
Joaquin Phoenix should go hang out at The Viper Room and hope to die.

He's been nominated for three Academy Awards. Being nominated for Oscars isn't the end-all argument, but I'm not sure I'd use the term "average" to describe the acting ability of Joaquin Phoenix.
I'd be interested in your top five list of actors of his generation (actors in their 40s and under).

Actually, it'd probably be 30s and under. Although, I'm not sure what the best way to really differentiate between acting generations is, since many of their ages are all over the place.

What about The Master? I heard he was solid in that, I've yet to watch though.

It was a weird film, but Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman were both excellent, with Phoenix being nominated for an Oscar. Great chemistry.Automatik;1521300 wrote:What about The Master? I heard he was solid in that, I've yet to watch though.

40's is hard to do, so here's a list of people 45 and younger in no order that are vastly superior to Jjoweazuinqin Phoenix:
Di Caprio
Mark Whalberg
Matt Damon
Jake Gyllenhaal
Hugh Jackman
I could keep going but I have better things to do than debate you on this topic.

Is Adam Sandler under 40? He's be in my Top 5 if he is.

I like Whalberg and Gyllenhall, but they have made some terrible movies. Not sure Id use them to put ahead of Phoenix.
Marky Mark does have FEAR, which alone could put him #1 all time...

Great cult film, I must admit. I watch it every time I see it. As for Wahlberg's real career, he was outstanding in a few films -- The Yards and The Departed, notably -- and I do like him. He's just not as versatile as Phoenix and it's not even close.
And Jake Gyllenhall was outstanding in The Day After Tomorrow, which was an utterly convincing end-of-the-world apocalyptic film that featured totally-believable computer-generated flesh-eating wolves and wasn't terrible at all.

Mark Wahlberg is one of my favorite actors as I pretty much like every movie he has been in but his acting in The Happening was horrifically bad. So much it almost had to be a joke the way he was acting in that POS.

All this gladiator talk and nobody is mentioning that Russell Crowe is a pretty good actor too lol, in fact he's the best in this movie! LA Confidential, Master and Commander, Cinderella Man, 3:10 to Yuma, Body of Lies, American Gangster and then his big ones in the Gladiator, The Insider and my favorite of his A Beautiful Mind
