I've heard Sleeper complain about this also but I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed this where they work..

There are very few women who work at our facility, but the one's who do seem to work about 4-5 hour shifts. Come in at 9 .. hour lunch (at least) and leave before 2:30.
I understand the concept of a flexable schedule, but it loses it's flexabilty if it never bends the other way. I typically work 50 hrs. I'll work more than that if necessary. There's points I'll go for months without working under 60 hour weeks. And it's not b/c I love my job... it's so I can meet my goals for the year.
I'd love to be able to see their plans for the year and how they can swing a 4-5 hour day..everyday.
And this isn't being sexist..it's definitely true for here.
It is a QQ though.

Not an engineer, so its a different culture for me. However I do find that women bend the rules when it comes to hours, and they seem to be sick and skip out on work easily a lot.

I work in an office setting, no difference in the hours worked between men and women. 50+ hours for everyone - don't think anyone seriously slacking would work as everything is built around project teams.

A few of our female principals work 3 days a week, but they're also paid 60% salary for their position so I have no problem with it.

Every place I have worked I have noticed this, and think we talked about it on here or the huddle. Women i have always worked with were more often to be late, leave early, extend a lunch, etc than guys. They would use the same excuses that they think are great but you know are BS, but anyways.

Don't notice it at my work place. One girl leaves an hour earlier than everyone else, but she also comes in an hour earlier and her work really isnt tied with anyone else's. She specializes in credits & incentives. Another one is usually coming in late/leaving early. But she is about 8 months pregnant and is a managing director, so she can do pretty much whatever she wants.

Company has been listed in the Working Mothers Magazine top 100 for 8 straight years, and I dont think they get preferential treatment.

Those evil women just like those entitlement people ... I worked my whole life, took responsibilities, provided for my family, paid into social security and paid for my own insurance and now those lazy mofo want what I earned...
They never put in the time, dedication and commitment, they want the same pay but work less all they do is take take and take again .. it never bends the other way …

My wife goes in two hours early every, takes less time for lunch, works 10 hours per day and takes Friday off ... it diver the other people crazy but she get her work done, best at what she does and everyone else will have to deal with it... or work smarter not harder...

The woman that works next to me typically comes in about 10-15 minutes after I arrive to work (which is around, say, 7 AM) and leaves a good hour to 1.5 hours before I leave (I leave usually just after 4 PM). Even if she's not taking a Lunch hour, that still doesn't add up to an "8-hour day."

Plus, she talks all throughout the day in another language on the phone, in a quite voice. You know that's not business. I'd argue that accounts for about 2-3 hrs of her day.

Of the four women in my office:

1. SALARY-COMMISSION: Basically the epitome of anything negative said on this thread. Spends tons of time on the phone with family, passes the blame on virtually anything going wrong to other departments and an annoying idiot on top of it (computer-dumb, constantly gabbing/gossiping, reading random tabloid headlines off websites, etc.).

2. HOURLY: Essentially an improved model of #1. Annoying and fond of wasting time, but at least has her head on straight somewhat.

3. SALARY: Is at times painfully inefficient and spends too much time gabbing with #1 and #2, but also works insane hours and never shies away from work. She'd probably get things done in a more timely manner if she was more "with it", but it's hard to complain when she sacrifices so much of her time to make up for that.

4. HOURLY: A bit like #3, with the "oooh, shiny" distractedness, but will also work (off the clock) as much as necessary and basically seems to have a crazy-good work ethic.

So, two bad and two that are good with the minor exception that in a close surroundings place like this office, all the chattering can be a bit annoying at times, so when I have to focus on stuff, I'm always putting headphones on to block people out.

Don't even get me started Zwick. I don't know a single woman that I work with that stays past 5p. However, they do spend a majority of their time at work bitching about how they never get any work done and are so far behind on projects. I almost want to tell them if they stopped complaining about how much work they had to do and actually DO their work they would have nothing to bitch about.

Also, it seems like a woman goes to the doctor at least 3 times a month or is sick weekly. I've been to the doctor twice in the past 5 years and even when I get sick I work from home on my laptop. We had a woman the other day walk into my bosses office and tell him she was going home because the office is too cold and she forgot her sweatshirt. My boss actually pushed back a bit and told her that it was okay but next time she forgot her sweatshirt she would have to take PTO.

The sad part is, most of these women don't realize that THIS TYPE OF SHIT is why you are paid less than men(among other reasons assuming the pay gap is even real). Your bosses aren't stupid; they see you working half ass the whole time while your male colleagues are busting their balls trying to get ahead. I won't even get into women who spend half the day running around looking for chocolate only to sit around and complain that they need to lose weight. I swear I know every woman in my offices diet plan and how many lbs they lost last weekend(usually something like 2lbs LOL). NEWS FLASH: No fucks are given if you lost or gained 2lbs!

she ask for no special treatment, she just works smarter, provided proof that staring early and work longer day is benifical and it works. The others are not willing to make the change but are more willing to complain

I don't know about the woman slacking at my workplace, but they definitely complain about the dumbest stuff.

With the exception of longer lunches, I've never really noticed this (well, and a lot more time on personal phone calls).

Also, I'd say a fair amount of this is legit. Sick days are going to tend to be staying home with sick kids. Doctors appointments are fairly legit, too (and women tend to simply be much better about doing their regular/routine/maintenance visits).

As for the hours some of you are saying, that's pretty insane. But I could see a different work day because of the kids, and maybe they make-up some of the hours at home.

But women in more professional/manager jobs...I've just never seen what people are talking about here.

It's an absolute joke that women are given special treatment just because they CHOOSE to pop out a few babies.

Actually I'm fine with it, but they don't deserve the same pay so they better STFU about it(again I dispute that a pay gap actually exists).

It's not special treatment BECAUSE they have kids, it's just most workplaces now accommodate family and it's still the woman that usually flexes her schedule because she makes less than her husband (partly because of months, sometimes a few years out of the workforce when she has a kid). And I agree there's not a real pay gap, but it's precisely such choices that create a faux pay gap that also lends itself to those choices continuing to be made.

I suspect when you find cases where the husband is at a lower level or makes considerably less that he'll often stay home with the kids and do more than his share of doctor appointments.

Interesting point. However does nothing to explain why I have to hear non-stop complaining about work load. I actually had a woman when I first started working come up to me and tell me she works way too hard and that she even stayed until 5:30pm on a Friday to try to get it all done. I think that week I worked 60+ hours and was there til 7:30p on a Friday. She's quit by now, off probably trying to find a husband or get knocked up because she's absolutely worthless in the workforce.

I'm also a pretty heavy advocate against the 40 hour work week. Hours worked is not always the best proxy for how much work someone is doing; most of the time I stay late is due to the ebs and flows of the workload in itself. Some days I have a lot to do in a tight window and other days I barely do anything. I'm fairly confident some of the time my workload increases is due to some woman crying to her boss that she had to put in a 40+ hour work week(most of which she spent talking about her diet with her co-workers).
