We just booked our room for a weekend in October. We've never been there before. Any recommendations for places to visit or eat? Other than the Biltmore we have nothing else planned.

I have been to NC before.

But never Asheville. I think I looked at it on a map before.

I hope this helps.

and btw...bring in all your porch furniture while you are gone.

Seems like a pretty cool small city. I'm ready to GTFO of Cincinnati so we are visiting potential landing spots for us.

I have never been there and don't know anything about it but I have heard of the city. Mostly because their college basketball team used to have a dude who was like 7'7" on it.

We booked a place through airbnb.com for only $65/night. Every fucking hotel room, cabin, and bed and breakfast was booked for that weekend. They also jack the prices up for the entire month of October. We are going the same weekend you tried.

With your technical background, you should look into the Triangle area of North Carolina. Great area for young professional couples.

I have been to Asheville/Lake James 4 times since we move to North Carolina in beginning of 2012 (live in Mooresville, work in Hickory which is only 1 hr east of Asheville.). Bring your wallet for the Biltmore - everthing is very expensive there!!! Me and wife liked the Red Stag restaraunt there the best - has different foods and unique place. Kids liked the Stables (good lunch place). It actually used to be their horse stables and not a restaurant.

There are alot of good restaruants in Asheville. We liked Village Wayside Bar and Grill (old train depot), Sunny Point Cafe for breakfast, Chorizo for Latin food, and Sky Bar for a drink and a rooftop view of the mountains.

You are going at a great time to see the foliage - have to drive and hike in Blue Ridge Park Way mountians - we liked Looking Glass Rock.

We did not partake in the nightlife, but there seemed to be alot there. Asheville has a very Hippy, Artsy, Alternative life style feel to it. Also a lot of haunted tours advertised there.

For its size, it's one of the nation's top cities for snob beer. I'm partial to stuff from Highland Brewing, but it's hard to go wrong with any of the locals.

If you or the wife like chocolate, there's a great shop downtown called The Chocolate Fetish.

Also downtown in the former Woolworth's is a pretty good, eclectic art gallery.

If you are a hiker there are trails galore! Go explore. The town of Brevard is damn cool as well.

I noticed they had a decent number of breweries in town. Big selling point for me.

NC works well for both of us. My wife wants to be close enough to the ocean that we can make easy weekend trips. Check. I want mountains and/or a rural area to live. Check.

We will definitely be checking the trails out if the weather cooperates.
