That's right. The Department of Natural Resources conducted a SWAT-style raid on an animal shelter over a baby deer. The DNR. SWAT-style raid. Baby deer. Does not compute. Our government is fucked.

They did the right thing. What the shelter was doing and their plans were dangerous as shit. Wisconsin has one of the highest rates of Chronic Wasting Disease in the country. They exposed every animal in the shelter to CWD potentially, and the plans to transport the fawn across state lines with the possibility of infecting other herds is probably one of the dumbest things I have ever heard.
Good job on the DNR.

They could have accomplished this without a SWAT team. Give me a break.LJ;1481135 wrote:They did the right thing. What the shelter was doing and their plans were dangerous as shit. Based on epidemiology, transmission of CWD is thought to be lateral (from animal to animal). Maternal transmission may occur, although it appears to be relatively unimportant in maintaining epidemics. Research has recently shown that an infected deer's saliva is able to spread the CWD prions.[SUP][8][/SUP]

Did that lady for the DNR really compare getting that fawn to a drug raid? LOL They used aerial photos to confirm that the deer was there! 9 armed agents, who rounded up all employees while they searched for a FAWN? Anybody have a guess as too how much resources were spent on this 1 fawn?

I get the biological issue - but the big problem is how it was conducted (and the point of this thread). The comparison to a drug raid was absolutely retarded tooLJ;1481141 wrote::huh:

CWD is a huge deal. It can decimate entire populations of deer. That coupled with the fact that hunting is one of the biggest tourism money makers in Wisconsin, the state has a huge interest in this.Mohican00;1481146 wrote:I get the biological issue - but the big problem is how it was conducted (and the point of this thread). Thirteen armed agents and deputies. That's SWAT-style. One deputy and a few unarmed DNR agents. Done.LJ;1481143 wrote:There wasn't a SWAT team. That was 1 person's exaggeration of what happened.

This is the bothersome part:
"If a sheriff's department is going in to do a search warrant on a drug bust, they don't call them and ask them to voluntarily surrender their marijuana or whatever drug that they have before they show up," Niemeyer said"
Yeah, but this isn't a drug bust. It is a routine law enforcement matter by a department that shouldn't be armed in the first place. Many regulatory agencies have field agents that enforce laws, they aren't armed like an FBI SWAT team that is actually investigating dangerous crimes.
Not to take this to the politics forum, but the militarization of our enforcement groups is becoming out of control. If you want to play soldier boy, sign up for the Marines. Investigating and enforcing wild animal laws, alcohol laws or other quality of life laws doesn't require a firearm, or a group of keystone kops.
In this situation, yes, you call the person beforehand and explain the rationale for enforcement action.

So this didn't happen? Thirteen armed men didn't show up to confiscate a baby deer? Yes, I understand it wasn't an actual SWAT team.said_aouita;1481150 wrote:Amazing someone who owns a website would be ignorant enough to believe everything they read online.

DNR always does that. Hell, the show on Animal Planet that follows the DNR Officers in Maine showed 9 agents to go get 1 unregistered snake.justincredible;1481149 wrote:Thirteen armed agents and deputies. That's SWAT-style. One deputy and a few unarmed DNR agents. Done.
