Your proposition is contradictory. A smart person or group doesn't continually bargain for short term meager benefits when in the aggregate the bargain is openly and obviously detrimental.

The whole point of Malcolm X trying to organize the black community after the Kennedy election was to fight for the types of programs and public intervention, New-Deal style programs and civil rights programs that were accomplished with the Great Society which people now use to demonize the black community and their support for democrats.

Well, what I said was "Jobs, Not Welfare" in the mold of the WPA. Things would be worse w/o SNAP, SSDI, Section 8 etc. but that doesn't mean we can't do better. Also, in the United States, a country with its own currency, you don't need "other people's money". In fact, it's non-sensical as the money to pay taxes as a matter of logic first comes from the government printing press or computer or from a bank creating credit that is regulated by the Central bank. Ironically that is all courtesy of Richard Nixon who was the most liberal president since FDR that we have had.

And, nothing about a strong public sector employer of last resort is Marxist or Socialist (in the vein you mean it). I'm a capitalist who understands that underemployment and unemployment is a necessary by product to control price stability and that the Public has a role in ameliorating this reality. Marx opposed social insurance because it would support the Capitalist mode of production (as Keynes pointed out in the General Theory...talking about how supporting demand freed the entrepreneur to invest in an environment without the odds against him) and prevent the working class from uniting against the capitalists enriching themselves off the rent from the working class.

And, if whites and wealth had not emigrated to the suburbs and cloaked themselves in corporate veils in protection of their wealth, taking the work away with them, the inner cities where minorities live wouldn't have the problems they have today even with the Great Society.

The percentage of African-Americans in poverty in 1960 was >55%. The percentage in 1968 was <27%. According to the latest census, 27.4% of african-americans are in poverty. So, the Great Society caused a dramatic improvement but we could've done much better (i.e. keeping the WPA instead of means-tested sustenance progams) but it certainly contributed to improving the lives of african americans if you think 27% poverty is > 55% poverty.

Also, your assertion that black people don't believe in taking care of themselves is, of course, a derogatory and offensive view of an entire group of people. It's not hard to see why blacks don't vote in solidarity with people who think that about them. Hope this helps. :thumbup:

If you want to have something like the WPA, it should be tied in with Welfare/Section 8/Food Stamps. You don't get your aid unless you work on a public project like the ones the WPA did (parks, public buildings, etc) for "x" number of hours a week (should be around 30 like the original WPA had).

Then you and I would be in agreement for once.

TANF, Section 8, Food Stamps should all be eliminated in favor a Job Guarantee at a minimum wage/price floor and should've never been created in the first place. The idea that the private sector would absorb unemployed workers and they only needed temporary assistance until the private sector would return to full employment has been nightmarishly wrong. These were created in the 60's when the economy was in the midst of the greatest boom in history and we began to think we had won the day against depressions.
