If I had the funds to pay full price for one right now I probably would. Looks great and packs 4GB of ram and 128GB of storage. Not bad.

So it may or may not be any better than the iPhone, depending on it's low light performance. Still though, open source could be amazing. I'm doubtful it will happen though, only have 27 days to raise $24 mil. Does look like a slick phone though.

I'd expect that pace to fall dramatically after the pop they got. I think they'll be lucky to get half their goal, in which case a big thank you to everyone for their corporate charity.

Not sure if and when that phone actually comes out that there won't be name brands with even more powerful offerings that dual-boot Windows. This just feels like a great opportunity to get in on Betamax.

Forgive me if I misunderstood this sentence, but if they don't fund 100% of their goal no one is charged.

I don't think you understand how these crowdfunding sites work. The funds are not even captured unless it hits 100% or more in the given time frame. If it doesn't hit $32m no one will be charged. Period.

This campaign will only receive funds if at least $32,000,000 is raised by Wed 21 Aug 11:59PM PT.

These sites would not work if this weren't the model for collecting funds.

I wonder how they handle the trolls then. For example I may only have a credit card with a $5k balance, whats to stop me from saying sure I'll signing up for the $80k model?

Different situations, one is theft and/or fraud, the other is the natural risk of investing in a start-up operation.

The folks at Ubuntu aren't going to screw anyone over. That would be devastating to their mission.

I do see where this platform allows for two different types of funding. One where they will still fund even if they don't reach their goal and one where, like I say, nothing is charged until they hit 100%.

Phone is a year or two out...that hardware will probably be mid-tier by then.

It's cutting edge hardware by today's standards, but in a year or two when that phone comes out simply nothing other than marketing hype. The "cutting edge" is dual booting a full laptop OS.

The only reason we don't have a phone with 128gigs of storage and 4gigs of ram now is cost - no one is going to sell that phone for $800 because hardly anyone would buy it.

Phones are already in the $600-700 realm, they're just subsidized by locking users into contracts.

Yes, but this one is going for upwards of $800. $150-$200 would buy you that extra ram and storage. Nothing else about the specs stand out, even by today's standards.
