I think the point he was making is that, inflation taken into account, it takes more work to earn less of a standard of living. I, personally, am okay with beating those odds, but they are what they are.

I don't necessarily approve of everything the Gen-Y/Millennial generation espouses, but it should be obvious to everyone that someone born in 1985 will not have the same lifestyle of someone born in 1955. We've peaked in terms of upwards mobility and opportunities, yet have placed more burdens and debt on young people. Not to take this to the politics forum, but Obamacare is a shining example of this. A 23 year old shouldn't have to pay more for her health insurance so a 73 year old should pay less - that's the whole point of insurance. Actuary values and returns.

My wife and I don't, and we are relatively wealthy. I don't seen any way that social security will be around by the time we're 70 years of age, and there is no concept of retirement. Then again we're the lucky ones, we actually were able to have jobs and even own a house.

The jobs aren't there. It is a fundamental problem not just in the U.S. but in the Western world in general. We're telling young people to take on mountains of debt (which can't be repaid) for an education that would qualify for them to work in a capacity that a high school diploma would get one decades ago. My father had two children and a house by the time he was 23 and had no educational debt. That simply not realistic anymore.

There is so much exaggeration in this whole idea. Millenials with advanced degrees much higher than the average baby boomer are taking low wage retail jobs with debt burdens that Boomers never even remotely faced. This idea that young kids nowadays are slackers and don't want to work is epic bullshit and the same shit 90 year old people used to say about those dope-smoking hippies!

A guy who was a motor head in high school in the 60's or early seventies could go to shop and live a decent life if he didn't go to college. People who place the bet of obtaining expensive human capital that they will pay bills on for life are still ending up with jobs that provide a lower standard of living than those jobs a boomer could've possibly had w/o having to acquire expensive human capital.

The average graduating high school student has had two realistic choices since the dot-com bubble: 1). Get a minimum wage job after high school and struggle to get by. 2). If you get into college, borrow to the hilt to pay for tuition on the prospect that this will allow you to have higher earning power so you don't have to struggle to get by...with odds increasing all the time that you might still struggle to get by if the bet doesn't pay off with higher earning power.

And let me say, I don't consider myself a Boomer basher. But, I find their complaints about the millenials to be facially absurd and annoying considering that most of them came of age in the greatest period of economic growth in the history of the United States. Every generation thinks the one coming after it is going to ruin everything but the kids are alright.

Like my father's brothers (one is the person I mentioned above)? They did their time in the army, and became mechanics. One worked at TWA, got bought out and became a pensioner retiree at about 55. The other worked at a local grease monkey shop. They weren't wealthy by any stretch of the imagination. But they had children, had jobs and did pretty ok....again not super wealthy.

That doesn't exist now. There are no employment prospects for my cousin. He's depressed because his former girlfriend left him - which I see as a net gain given that she has about $100,000 in student loan debt going to veterinary school and still hasn't found a job. This isn't going to end well.

I'm a smart guy. I've had good advice, and my retirement doesn't hinge on Social Security. Some people are not that sophisticated and bought into the government lie that SSI takes care of your needs in retirement.....I didn't have any option on my Social security taxes. GWB tried to make it so, but was shot down by the very people 'we' (with the great help of the under 40 crowd) elected in 2008 and '12.

Now, as a society, if you wish to have a retirement program for the unsophisticated financially illiterate, so be it. Social Security can be fixed...it is only an actuarial exercise and a willingness to pay for it, if X and Y's want to fund a plan for the common guy. But your not going to fix it, or get anything better by electing the guys we keep electing. That a problem that cuts across generational lines.

I personally as a boomer who earned every fk'n penny I have (...and I've got a shit pot full of 'em) don't give a rats ass what happens to the next generation after they pay for my SS. That was how the game was set up and that's how my generation played it. I lol'd at this post. I can't speak for all people under 30(and neither can you btw), but I know of the 3 people at my company that are under 30 including myself that work harder than any of the senior staff.

Also I know zero people in my generation that except a 6 figure entry level job; another misnomer by the boomer generation. I think people in my generation would just be happy with a job that doesn't pay minimum wage and has some sort of healthcare package to go along with it. This isn't the 60's, jobs like that are hard to come by.
