Pete never won the French. Federer is just better than Pete. I know you didnt ask me, but I am giving my opinion anyway. Federer is a much better returner and much better groundstroker. Volleys are Pete, but close. Serving is amazing close, but Pete had more power.vball10set;1469231 wrote:You seem pretty connected to the sport, so I'd like to ask you- how do you think Federer compares with Sampras? I don't follow it close enough to make a knowledgeable comparison, but I do remember Pete being nearly unbeatable, especially in his prime.
Sampras made a living at Wimbledon and Fed has more than him...
Fed:
US Open - 5
Wimbledon - 7
French - 1
Aussie - 4
Pete:
US Open - 5
Wimbledon - 7
French - 0 (Made Semis only 1 time...never the finals).
Aussie - 2

Federer is an all around better player. On their weakest surface clay:
Pete made one french semi. federer has made the semis twice, finals 5 times winning one.
Federer has won the Aussie 4 times, Pete twice.
Both won Wimbledon 7 times and the US open five times.
Pete never won more than 2 majors in a year. Federer has won 3 majors in a year 3 times. Federer has also won 150 more tennis matches overall while losing 20 fewer matches than Sampras.
Federer is clear number 1 in my eyes with Sampras a leader for number 2

Getting late to the thread... I was surprised there wasn't one until pretty much when the finals were done. But just wanted to say that might have been one of the most intense matches I've watched. I didn't believe Murray would win that set when he went down 4-2 and I honestly thought he might just have another choke job. I was very happy for him to get the win though. I'm not a fan of Joker at all.
As for best of all time right now it's easily Federer(for the same reasons Laley and gport listed). Samparas would be #2 for me as well. Then I'd probably go Borg, Agassi, Nadal, Laver, Lendl, McEnroe, Connors, Becker to round out a top 10.

All three of you know more about the sport than I, so all of your opinions matter. Thanks.Iliketurtles;1469304 wrote:Getting late to the thread...
