all my kids can drive a stick...I made them learn to drive on one. I prefer/demand one on a sports car....but it's pretty stupid putting one in a luxury car, if you can even find one that has it. Really depends on the vehicle.

From a practical standpoint, an automatic makes sense on most cars, but you lose style points putting one in a car made for off road or in an expensive sports car. It's like eating a top cut of steak 'well done'.

Although it's rather easy to find parking in my current area, a car isn't really needed here. I use my truck in short periods if I have to move something, or if I can't find a good deal on a flight. I have an unlimited subway/bus pass, that's all you really need. Owning a car here is more of a luxury than a necessity, like COA said....for the most part its a pain in the ass.

Even though I get raped on pretty much everything in terms of cost, I actually love not having to deal with a vehicle..one of the main appeals that brought me to NYC. I've had lemons for the most part so it's nice to not have to deal w/ insurance, gas, repairs, etc.

I dread the day I have to depend on a vehicle again...if that day even comes.

What I find odd is I live about a 5 iron from a car rental place in town and it seems to do very well. There isn't an airport within 75 miles and we hardly have any hotels (3 places you'd stay)....and everyone I see renting is an out of towner.

Learned on a manual but hated it, so got an automatic. 6 years later drove a manual and liked it. Definitely keeps you more engaged when driving, but in a traffic jam it sucks. I really wanted a manual Accord but couldn't find one, so stuck with an automatic for now. Wanna get an older manual Wrangler one day.

I've watched FRIENDS and they only needed a car about 8 times in 250 episodes.

My first car was a Honda Civic hatchback and it was a manual and awesome.....and 55 horsepower! It was about 1/2 windows and it's turning radius allowed you to do a circle on a two lane county road without going in the ditch.

I think if I had that attitude, I'd punch myself in the face. I don't mean that in a personal way...I just would not be able to tolerate 'no vehicle'.

I drive a manual like a boss. Don't even need to use the clutch except when starting.

prefer manuals, but i drive in too much traffic to ever own one. If i had the money for a weekend car it'd be a stick, preferably a 6sp.

Can anyone here drive a column shift? Those are old and cool as hell. Also, parking with a manual sucks ass too.

This. My first and third cars were manual. I taught myself to drive a manual car, and while I do enjoy it, I am glad my current car is automatic. I know Akron isn't huge and the traffic isn't too terrible, but there are still times where I wouldn't want to be stuck in traffic with a stick shift.

I do think it's a good idea for everyone to know how to drive stick, just in case you are stuck somewhere and that's the only option.

Never had a manual car. Parents both had automatics growing up so didn't have much exposure to manuals.
