^^^^ to answer that question, I first want to say that I'm not taking any of this personally, and I don't mean to seem to attack anyone...I am simply relating my views based on my baseball experience.

#1...we are talking about the Indians...an American League team that plays with a DH.
#2 ..The exception to the rule are professional leagues that do not play with a DH (like the National League) in pro leagues pitchers concentrate on their craft and not hitting and are usually so bad as hitters that it overrides what we are talking about. In the AL, the weakest hitter batting in the 8th spot on a good team probably is not hitting below .220, or Mendoza line at worst. Pitchers in the NL are often way below that. Because of that, rosters are constructed differently, and pinch hitters are often employed mid to late game. ( giving the effect of putting a good hitter in the 9th spot). Check out a National League team's batting order when they are playing in an AL park.
Note also that in lower leagues the practice of the pitcher batting 9th is rarely seen, as often the pitcher is one of the best hitters on a high school or even a college level team.

#3).. putting a decent hitter with speed in the 9 hole also guarantees that when you get to the bottom of the order, you are going to be in the midst of a rally with good hitters coming up, or you will start the next inning with one of your speedy 'inning starters' coming up. It also increases the chances that when your big bopper (#3 hitter, high average with power) comes up that someone will be on base who can score from first on any extra base hit.

I wasn't saying or implying he would...I was saying that even if he did...he would still be batting 9th on this team ( unless Bourn is on the DL)

Yeah....I know and agree, just thought no way can he hit .275 unless it's mostly lefties.

It's kind of a shame that Reds fans have such a negative opinion of Stubbs. I find him to be a pretty useful player. His defense is excellent and his speed and base running abilities are first rate. I think a lot of that negativism come from fans' unmet expectations, and I see this a lot in a guy that comes up thru an organization. The guy gets a label (all star leadoff centerfielder) as a prospect, and if he doesn't develop into that, the fans kind of turn on him. On the Indians, it might be Chris Perez or might happen to Justin Masterson if he doesn't perform to 'Ace' standards. He may end up a pretty damn good #3 pitcher, but Cleveland fans may 'hate' him because he should have become an Ace. Young players will develop into what they will be....but not necessarily what we expect. I like Stubbs for what he is. Reds fans don't like him for what he didn't become.
