I go time with my interval training.

Same rest to run ratio. Starte 30 sec by 30 sec. Now I do 60 and 60. Use my GPS watch and when I do a personal best in pace for over half of the intervals I add an additional one the next time. Am up to 18 sets right now. Still mix it up though, sometimes I will do the 30 and 30 or go to the track and do distance.

Key is to keep it fresh so your body doesnt get used to it...and so you dont get bored.

Sonofanump;1729487 wrote:What is your ratio for sprint to walk/recovery? I find myself sprint 40-50 yards then walk 100-150 yards.
I go by time, 1 min walk, 1 minute sprint.

In that time I get about 125 yards in the walk, 315 yards in the sprint (about 1/4 mile in 1 cycle).

I have done this for an hour straight as my max and get 7.5 miles in an hour.

I typically do 24-32 minutes, so I get anywhere from 3-4 miles in this way.

When I am feeling REALLY good (had a couple rest days, no weights on legs, and no cardio), I will go 1 min sprint and 30 sec walk. This makes the pace obviously faster by cutting out some of the recovery/walk time, but I do this somewhat rarely, maybe once every over week.

I do 3 days of cardio a week, and 3-4 days of lifting (some days I have the time to do both, I usually have 1 or 2 days a week of total rest no workout at all).

I saw some dude at the gym with one a couple weeks ago. It is one thing to use one doing cardio while training for MMA.

However, he was using it while lifting only, on a machine, at a planet fitness. On top of it he was taking like 5 minute breaks between sets, so there was never a time he would have been out of breath.

I wanted to laugh out loud so bad, but I was nice and just laughed on the inside.

The article made it seem like it shouldn't be used period, regardless of sport.

I think I brought it up. Wasn't really looking into buying one, just wondered if it actually helps anybody.

Also glad you posted this article. A somewhat overweight guy in my office has a fit bit bracelet and I always make fun of him for it. Just more fuel for the fire. I think fit bits are a huge waste of money, especially in this guys case since his diet is absolute shit. Now, if they somehow actually create a device that could accurately count the macros going in your body as you eat them, I would be intrigued.

Is that like at 70%-80% of your max speed?

I agree. Never really understood those fitbit but I guess if it gets someone up and moving more I guess it cannot hurt, but for most just a waste.

A HRM came with my garmin gps watch I got years and years ago. I used it sparingly when I first got it just to make sure I was getting my heart rate to where I wanted, but in the last 6-7 years I havent touched it as I know my limits now.

Yup, and so do I (work out there that is, convenience, one 5 min from where I work so I can go during lunch, and another 5 min from home).

Yes, if my absolute max (say for a 40 yard dash) is 16 mph, I do these 1 min sprints at about 12 mph. (75%)

I'm surprised they let you lift there. With a 300+ lb bench press you'd fall under their classification of "meathead" or "lunkhead" or whatever those p#ssies refer to anyone who lifts real weights as.

It's really not that terrible, as long as you aren't screaming and throwing weights down, no one cares.

They have plenty of dumb bells and plate/free weights to lift what you want to lift, even for the big guys.

The two things that are ridiculous there:
1. No scales anywhere, when I asked and they told me it was "because they might discourage someone" I laughed out loud (literally). Yeah, let's take the one thing out that most people will step on at home anyway to measure their progress.
2. The freaking pizza parties on whatever night they have them (I typically work out at lunch, sometimes early AM). Nothing says 'fitness' like chowing down on pizza while you 'work out'.

Must have more lax rules at yours. My understanding was "no big weights", "absolutely NO deadlifting" and "lots of free pizza and Tootsie Rolls." Oh, and "no big guys."

There is, well was, a local gym that had a food place in it that served anything but healthy stuff. Pizza, wings, nachos, pop and.....wait for it... BEER! You could put the food/drink on your monthly bill as well.

It was wonderful!

On a serious note... my diet is shit currently. Well, not "shit," but I'm not on a strict diet like I should be. My working out is definitely up, though.

Depends on what your definition of "big weights" is. I have had 800 lb on the leg press, 350 on the bench/smith and have seen guys put 500+ on the squat/smith.

I have only seen a free bar at one of them, so a real bench or dead lift would be hard. One could dead lift on a smith I suppose and put whatever weight you want.

The only way someone says a word is if you are, again, screaming and/or throwing/dropping weights (like many do after a dead lift for example).

The pizza and tootsie rolls thing is stupid, absolutely stupid.

I have been to about 6 different planet fitness's (I travel a lot for work), and never seen anyone get talked to about "big weights", only those pulling the tough man screaming/yelling or throwing weights.

I never understood that, even back in HS when I was lifting big weight for my size (180-185 lb, benching 375, squatting 500+, big dead lifts, etc) I never screamed, went ape like, or dropped the bar with 300+ lbs on it. If you can't lift without keeping yourself and the weight under control what good are you really doing?

:)

The thing about the pizza/Tootsie Rolls is kind of genius, from a business sense. Fatten them up and then shame them to keeping their memberships with "fat" guilt.

That would really work well if they put a dang scale in the locker room!

Well at least you are getting in some PT.
I was very strict for the past 8 weeks for this last weekend and then saturday night helped myself to a fantastic meal and dessert and a couple of drinks. Taking a few days off to rest and heal but only 2 days of eating complete shit. One big mistake people make is try to do a complete 180 on their habits and it just is tough to do. Slowly start to substitute things out, still enjoy your fav stuff but just in much limited quantities.
