This is their retail affiliate, not the transmission/distribution or wholesale affiliate. Ohio is a retail choice state, so lots of retail affiliates compete to make sales. Their retail affiliate has more pricing flexibility than whatever the POLR rate gets stuck to their t&d side, so this is a big money maker for them.

In sales you should do what is going to make the general population you are trying to sell to feel at ease.
I had a buddy who had tattoo sleeves all the way down his arms. Very smart guy and tremendous salesman. Through some trial and error he figured out that he was much more successful selling cars when he had on his long sleeves and seemed like just a normal guy.
I have known places that request, and require, their employees while they are customer facing to take out their visible piercings in eyebrows, excessive ears, tongue's, etc.
Of course it depends on the business you are in. Some instances that would be totally acceptable but in many it isnt to the company.
It is all about knowing your target audience and putting the salesmen in front of them that they are accostomed to seeing. I know of a delivery company years ago that made sure on one certain route that they had a black driver. It was an exceptionally brutal area of the city and when they sent whitey out he ran into problems.
Not saying it is right, just saying that if you really want to hawk your wares you should do a little bit of research on the TA.

The problem is that in your case, the company isn't allowed to say "we have this backward town full of bigots and other assorted trash, we need to send in white people only to sell to these relics". It's a violation of federal law to do so.

Eh. It's ironic because in rate cases, the utilities argue that people won't confuse the wholesale/retail/t&d sides of their businesses, and yet threads like these make it abundantly clear that most people don't differentiate.
To clarify, the DP&L person calling you to buy power works for a different company than the DP&L that operates the transmission/distribution system.

I imagine that many on the OC dont understand it because they either: A. Live with their parents and have no idea about the electrical rates or B. live in an apartment that dont allow you to switch carriers. One can really get a better rate if you look for it. The transmission/distro charges still will show up as the same but the KW rate can go down. One thing to look at though is to make sure if you switch if there is a contract to sign, or a cancellation fee down if you do switch later on.
