I still don't see a crime in it. Sherm is buying the steaks, not the EBT. This would be stupid, if true.LJ;1447089 wrote:The guy said that he was going to use his EBT to do it. Like I said, the guy would have been undercover. They are trying to crack down on this stuff like crazy.

Blue collar crime is small potatoes, The big money is in white collar crime. Lots of ways to scam the government out of money. Hope this helps.

Free market should take care of it. Once things are restored the town will remember it and the store will go out of business. Just spread the word around town so that everyone knows about it.ernest_t_bass;1447064 wrote:It's stories like these that make me despise capitalism.

I'm all for free market, and hold firm to laissez faire doctrine. But this greed is so fucking stupid. This should be a criminal act.

And the cable office is always good for laughs (if you can tolerate the wait). Without fail, there are always at least a few people there who's service has been shutoff. And there's absolutely no shame in talking about this, or their welfare, or their food stamps. Yet these people have more expensive cable bills than any of my friends (who can easily afford it) - we're talking multiple DVR's, HD, multiple premium channels - $200+ /month. And I can only imagine what their cell bills are like.
How do these people even pass a credit check to get the service? Cable companies must figure getting a few hundred out of these people is better than nothing.

Gouging IS a criminal act, and I believe gouging during a natural disaster/crisis carries extra penalties.justincredible;1447445 wrote:I agree that it's stupid but disagree that it should be a criminal act.
Although I kind of agree with regard to company-specific gouging. The free market does take care of that (can't help stupid consumers, though). The problem with gouging is when the "market" (even if it's a handful of local gas stations) COLLUDE to inflate prices.
But I would offer one caveat: in the immediate days after an event like this, when demand spikes and supply channels take time to adjust...How else should you ration a necessary commodity such as bottled water? You know people will come in there and stock-up on 2 weeks or more of water. Of course, purchase limits are probably sufficiently effective.

edit: Guns also hold their value very well, some even appreciate, especially in a market where supply is short. Not a bad investment at all.

3 of the 5 were Lerner's, go figure. I would also doubt that any of them live full time in Ohio.Pick6;1447450 wrote:http://www.bizjournals.com/dayton/news/2011/04/11/ohios-top-5-wealthiest-people.html

One example of his ridiculous wealth that I just found out about not too long ago:Commander of Awesome;1447455 wrote:Still pretty crazy to have that kind of wealth at your wife's school.
This is the view of our street from one end (very short street, only about 14 or 15 houses on it). Notice there are only houses on one side. The other side is a parking lot for students at the school (yes, we live right across the street). There used to be the same number of houses on the other side of the street. This guy bought every single one of them, tore them down, and donated the land to the school so they could put in a parking lot and football stadium.
