More background checks would have prevented this. That, or a ban on 30 round "clips", because once you shoot them they are gone.

Cincinnati Enquirer posted the story on facebook. The third comment was "Gun control now." I facepalm'd.

A big reason I can't facebook anymore. It's just a constant stream of stupidity anytime there's an event like this.

That would be a tragic thing to witness for anyone, especially young people.

I try to stay away from comment sections on stories like this but I let my guard down. This will keep me from checking any others for a while.

Absolutely. It's an absolute shame that this young man thought that suicide was the answer, but worse than that, that he decided to bring a bunch of his peers into it.

Status updates from random people are just as bad though. I trashed my Facebook months ago, but from what I hear from friends it's that it was a complete shitshow when the Newtown shooting went down.

I definitely think less of some of my friends and acquaintances because of facebook.

I know that obviously this is sarcastic. But are you against further background checks? If so, just curious as to why? Because it seriously harms no law abiding citizen to have more extensive background checks before purchasing a gun so I dont really understand the resistance to it

The background checks in place right now are sufficient to weed out 99% of the people who shouldn't have guns. Further background checks might prevent 0.00001% more people from buying guns, but it isn't the problem.

If someone wants a gun bad enough, they're going to get their hands on one (stealing, having someone else buy it, etc).

There are threads in the poli forum discussing this. But I am 100% against any further background checks. dlazz hit on it pretty well.

Agreed.

Interesting you mention FB. As I listen to young people (young whippersnappers, if you'd like), I'm amazed that they tease each other concerning the low number of "likes" "hits" "views" or "followers" one has. It all seems very attention seeking to me. ...much like walking into a classroom or cafeteria and attempting suicide as opposed to staying in seclusion and doing it.

Oh well. Maybe an isolated and unrelated case to my narcissism conspiracy theory.

I hate hearing or seeing things like this happening. It pisses me off that people would even do this to their families. Ugg its just disgusting.

You're comparing likes on facebook to attempting suicide in a school cafeteria?

Not even close! Ha. But that made me chuckle.

My point was the number of coversations I hear on a daily basis concerning some poor kid only having 38 followers on twitter answers the question of why walk into a filled cafeteria? Why not do it in your room. One word: Attention. Gotta have the views, the likes, the followers, the looks ... the attention. Can't get attention by shooting yourself in a room. Ya gotta go somewhere in public!

I definitely understood the parallel you were trying to make.

If by gun control they mean hitting your target, I'll get behind that. The only gun control we need is awareness of gun owners to securely control access and availability to your guns. Don't know how this kid got the gun, but parents especially need a safe.

The sad thing about suicide is that it's "contagious." When one person does it, typically there are more to follow. Generally people don't think of it as a "solution" to their problems until someone else does it. And then once others realize it's an option, then they may take the same course of action and repeat the same mistake.

It's bad enough that this kid felt that suicide was the answer, but thank God he didn't decide to take others with him. How many times over the last few years have we encountered that scenario... :(

Because there are different studies that point to the idea that suicide is contagious in the sense that is clustered in time and space.

Different academic, peer reviewed papers have been published about this idea. And they have been approached it from different viewpoints such as a celebrity/athlete suicide leading to the rise in suicides, or if a family member or friend commits suicide, that often leads to an increase in likelihood of suicide, or as a workplace phenomenon.

I just don't have the different articles I've read available at the moment, but there is information out there if you are curious. Most of what I read was either related to my psych undergrad or a law and social sciences class in law school.

I've never heard of suicide being "contagiuous".
