My wife has done this a few times, but didn't shred the checks. I almost deposited them when I found them in her files.

Shredding isnt necessary, but disposing them is.

If you accidentally try to deposit it again, there is a decent sized fee (at most banks). So why not just get rid of it and avoid that possibility.

You also dont want checks just lying around, imo.

Do it all the time with Chase. Once it clears, I destroy the check

I write VOID on each check after deposit. No chance of depositing it again.
