The crazy thing about it: He was just attending there and allegedly had no desire to play football, but Bo Pelini found out and made it his personal crusade to get him on the team. The only reason I can comprehend for this is that Pelini realizes that virtually everyone looks at him as some gigantic raging asshole, so he figures that if Richmond is on the team, stays clean and goes on to any sort of productive future, he can take credit for "turning his life around" and bank on that as a springboard to a respectable job, instead of being stuck in fucking Youngstown.

Could be, because there is seemingly not much to gain by bringing on the 'distraction'.
