It's not that it's difficult here. I just don't think people are interested in the effort. However, Mars has condition that seem like they would certainly play a role, I would think.

I didn't even think that they probably would be constructing multiple buildings there (because it would suck to continue living in a 5-man capsule) - hydroponics to support 5 people probably requires a decent size building well beyond their spacecraft.. The plants probably take care of the oxygen requirement, too. Still not sure what they do about water.

I would think they'd need to create some sort of terrarium large enough to handle the water cycle, which could theoretically handle the water with a small enough population maybe.

Still, I'd rather not be the lab rat for that experiment.
