We have a new pope! I'm not Catholic, but still a facinating and important historic event.

As an estranged Catholic, I'm pretty interested to see who was actually elected.

I think in order to try to bring back the members that have left the church or have issues with it (due to the sexual abuse scandals and the antiquated policies) this is a very important Papal Election. I would not be surprised if the new Pope is someone much younger than previously elected Popes, or someone from a non-European country.

Looking forward to this announcement.

Jorge Bergoglio, a Jesuit of Argentina. He will be known as Pope Francis I. He is the first pope from the Americas. Pretty historic selection.

Very disappointing that they elected another Pope pushing 80. But at least they have gone with a non-European Pope.

I don't think this will do much to bring people back to the Church.

When do they decide what papal name he'll be taking?

As for relevance, the Pope has the same relevance as the Royal Family. It is a position that bears historical significance, but doesn't seem to demonstrate much more than a very high profile celebrity contemporarily.
