BMI is a joke. When will they get rid of that shit?

What sucks is that they still use it for health screenings. Measure my body fat bitches!

I work for an insurance company and BMI makes me angry. But I doubt they ever get rid of it because it's an easy number to calculate and people don't like math.

It's still not great, but Ideal Body Weight is a little more accurate IMO.

IBW for Males = 106 + (6lbs x inches over 5 feet)

Rule of thumb is 75% of IBW is underweight, 125% is overweight.

So 215 would be your "overweight" mark. But again, it's still not very scientific.

Any measurement that looks at weight and height but doesn't account for the difference in weight between fat and muscle is going to be inaccurate.

^ Of course, but there's no quick, inexpensive, and readily available way to measure body fat content. Hydrostatic weighing is too difficult for normal facilities, air displacement plethysmography is too expensive, dual x-ray absorptiometry is both too technical and too expensive, and bioelectrical impedance and skinfold assessments are both inaccurate. Healthcare providers have to have something to go off.

215 would be "obese" for 5' 11".

Yeah. At a shade under 5'10", I can definitely say that when I've been 215, I've been a chub-muffin. But then again, according to BMI, at 170, I'm barely under the obese line (as big as a person could be while not being "obese").

So...all these quick "are you fat or not" calculations suck.

My bad, you're right. Which is the same as obese for BMI, so I guess they're really no different.

I would say a simple waist measurement would be just as accurate if not more.

179-214 is considered overweight with BMI-25-29.9. Maurice Jones-Drew's BMI is 31.2. Flawed.

I'm not disagreeing with you. But people with muscle mass should know that they are norm, at least in this country.

Oh, I know your not. Just super flawed way of looking at things.
