the 2013 Orrville sports hall of fame induction class is all set. 8 inductees and all 8 have accepted this great honor.

The 8 are:
Renauld Ray
Marcell Denson
Tommy Brenner
Tim Hiller
Bob Weltlich
Doug Steiner
Mike Burkholder
Chris Royer

Nice class. Induction is September 14th at the school.

I thought so....glad to see Marcell & Renauld go in together. Renauld got nominated last time (2011) but turned it down because he wanted to go in with Marcell.

Hiller, Brenner, Denson & Ray are four of probably the top 20 athletes in OHS history.

The 1995 & 1996 state title basketball teams will be honored on this night as well. Should be fun.

Good class! I personally think that one of those guys on there is a STRETCH!!! Definately has all to do with the little college success he had because very AVERAGE while a Rider! My opinion..though.

The coach on that list was another who didn't do a lot at Orrville but a successful D-1 college coaching career (500+ wins I think..maybe more) is impressive.

Not saying I disagree, but its not just success at Orrville that can qualify someone...it should be very important though.

Interesting point. I think I know who you are talking about. He did have a solid college career. He was a top 5 hitter his senior year???? Super pumped for Burk! We need to all show up with clip boards! LOL!

I've charged your high jumping friend with the task of rounding up as many track alums as possible for the evening.

RedRider1,

I remember my Jr. year we lost a triangular meet at New Philly, we lost by like 3 points or something.... Jamie Clymer and I both "NH" in the meet (no heighted). We would have easily took first and second. It was the first dual or triangular meet Burk had lost in 5 or 6 YEARS!!!! At the team meeting he shed a tear in front of the team and talked with me later personally about the importance of history, not of HIS history but Red Rider history, what that meant and the weight it carried, the responsabilty we all had to our TEAM. I remembered him always being emotional during football games and pregame talks but when I whitnessed that same emotion from him at a track meet I realized it really was about "Red Rider Tradition". With that kind of leadership all we had to do was show up! Guy is simply first class in my book PERIOD!!! :)

He'll be the only 1 of the 8 inductees to not be a graduate of Orrville...but hard to tell from that story.

Not a big college basketball guy, but didn't Bob Weltlich take Old Miss to Sweet Sixteen or Elite Eight or Final Four, before he moved on to Texas then a Florida College?

Great AD, he is one of those guys, people wont realize how much he did until he is gone. Best wishes to him and best of luck to his replacement.

This. He did a lot of thankless work...and for being a part time position, he put in full time hours plus some.

Hoping he can stay on as a facility manager maybe just for a year or two to help with transition.

And yes, this was due to the levy failure...more responsibilities were laid at his feet and he chose to retire instead is what I'm hearing. Can't blame him. More and more is being laid on the plate of teachers & admins for the same pay.

Typically, theres only a few retirees per year. Thinking there's around 12 this year. Tells you what the current state of teaching has become. Add a local uncertainty with the levy & it's not a good environment right now.

Seems like the admin are leaning quite heavy on teachers, and I get that since a lot of costs are tied up in salary/benefits, but you lose good people. Sometimes there's no replacing that.

A disturbing trend I've been hearing around town....

"I'm looking at options to open enroll my kid."

Real worried if this renewal fails in August you'll see mass defections to other districts and a big drop in enrollment among the high achievers who aren't going to let their kids wallow in mediocrity & large class sizes.

When those statements are coming from people with Orrville pedigrees, that's a huge concern.

Again..simply saying "no new taxes" isn't going to cut it.

I agree with all that. I also want to say that some of the stuff that is being talked about as far as what may happen is very disturbing for Orrville City Schools. I hate that we are in this position, but the state has caused this and now we have to find a way out of the mess.

State has caused SOME of this...but our town is very different in terms of demographics. When 50% of kids in the school are on free or reduced lunch, that's a concern. I'd bet a lot of parents of those kids aren't voting for levies.....but they always have room in the budget for smartphones & mountain dew by the case.

Too many takers in this town....not enough givers.

Old Rider, if your children put on a uniform from another school wouldn't their skin burn like a vampire in the sun. LOL
