Hoping to see Silver Linings Playbook with Mantooth on Saturday. Otherwise, I haven't seen basically any of the movies that got the most noms. My birthday is coming up, though and I think Mantooth is going to get me some copies of some of them as a cheap, thoughtless gift.

Has anyone watched Silver Linings Playbook? I didn't think it looked that great from the previews. I was pretty shocked when I saw the rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

^ I was gonna watch it the other day, but I saw the preview and watched Argo instead. I definitely was happy with my choice.

I'll probably watch Silver Linings Playbook this weekend.

Silver Linings Playbook is the only Best Picture nominee I've seen (which is crazy as I used to see 50-60 movies a year in the theaters, in the past year I've seen 2). It was a good movie, but not great, I'd give it a 7/10, definitely not worthy of an Oscar. Bradley Cooper was much better in it than I expected him to be in a somewhat serious role, also Jennifer Lawrence was hot in it. The movie was worth seeing, but not all that memorable...

Silver Linings Playbook was good, and a very unconventional romantic-comedy. Great acting all around, funny moments that aren't jokes shoe-horned in for cheap laughs, and a great story that tackles the issue of mental illness relatively well.

I liked it a lot but expected a bit more given all of its accolades. It is certainly worthy of being an Oscar nominee but has no business winning.

Also after having looked at the nominees for Best Supporting Actor, I gotta think Phillip Seymour Hoffman has it in the bag.

I'll give Silver Linings Playbook a look. I just didn't think it looked like an Oscar worthy flick from the previews.

I concur about Seymour Hoffman winning best supporting actor.

I have yet to see Lincoln, but if DDL is truly a shoe-in, that's a shame because Joaquin Phoenix was AWESOME in The Master.

When people talk about Lincoln in the future, as in the actual man, they will picture DDL.

DDL will (and should) win, but Lincoln was underwhelming IMO. That said, the guy is truly amazing. 2012 was a year of great independent and documentary films, and "ok" at best Hollywood films. The best pic nominations are probably the worst since the year "Crash" won.

I'm probably in the minority but I hated everything about The Master.

What didnt you like? It tackled the 13th amendment better than most history documentaries. I thought it was awesome, but I also knew exactly what it was about beforehand...

I know some people that didnt realize it was such a short part of his life and that it was all about passing the 13th amendment, so they were taken aback a bit.

I didn't dislike it, would give it a good, solid 3 out of 4 stars on the Ebert scale. Good movie, not exactly best picture worthy, although DDL certainly is. I think his best actor Oscar is a lock.

Probably not. I bet a lot of people hated that movie. You have to know what you're getting from the movie before even seeing it. PT Anderson's movies aren't about plot, they're about character. If you're the type of person that loves great plot (the vast majority of people are like this) then a lot of PT Anderson movies aren't for you. Boogie Nights is probably his most plot-driven film (its practically a love letter to Marty Scorsese), while Magnolia, There Will Be Blood, Punch Drunk Love, and The Master are more character films where "nothing happens". I like a movie like that every once in awhile as a change of pace. PT Anderson manages to make the films absolutely gorgeous as well as squeezing amazing acting performances out of his cast.


On another note, I saw Zero Dark Thirty tonight and its fucking fantastic. My movie of the year from what I've seen so far. Granted I've only seen Les Miserables and Silver Linings Playbook so far, but I'm gonna try to see Lincoln, Django, and Argo before the Academy Awards.

You may think that, but that doesn't make it true. Especially considering its listed right at the top of this thread as a Best Picture Nominee at the Academy Awards for films released in the 2012 calendar year. ;)
