Pretty sure it's time to get my wisdom teeth removed. Last time I went to the dentist, he said he could tell they were about to break through, and damn, it sucks.

I know you pretty much feel awful for a few days, but has anyone had a generally easy/hard time with this procedure? Just trying to grasp what to expect.

Definitely go under. Go to sleep, wake up, and you're done.

Have somebody who can take care of you and keep the medicine on schedule. Also, I don't know how big you are, but my mom had problems walking me to the car. She's a little lady and I was a 230lbs football player at the time. I couldn't keep my balance. After the 5 minute drive home, I had to throw up.

I slept most of the first day. It really isn't that bad. Food getting stuck in the holes suck for a couple weeks.

Thanks dude. I am 100% against not being put under lol. My cousin wasn't sedated when he had his removed, he said they were literally straddling him yanking at his mouth. Granted, he didn't feel anything, but my nerves would be shot from that.

I couldn't imagine being awake. Even if you can't feel it, you can imagine.

I had all four pulled out at once (best way to go) on a Friday. Little woozy the rest of the day. Ha weekend to fully recover and was back to work Monday morning.

I had all mine pulled at the same time too. They put me out and I didn't feel a thing. I got infections on both sides so my face swelled up like a chipmunk, but the drugs were good and I was never in any pain. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be other than looking funny for a few days.

I was lucky enough to not have wisdom teeth. Must mean me stoopid.

They come in all shapes, sizes, and positions, so one person's experience is not necessarily what yours will be. Some are pretty easy...others may keep you down for days. Ask your dental surgeon...he'll give you the most accurate despcription as to what to expect. Usually, as a general rule if 1 or more of the teeth are impacted to any degree...good idea to go to sleep.

I had them pulled many years ago. I was knocked out and that has to be that way to go. I had alot of gauze but was good to go 36 hrs later.

Definitely get knocked out. Most insurance covers it so I don't know why people wouldn't go that route. Just take all 4 out at the same time.

Plan on something soft to eat that first day - soups, oatmeal, stuff you don't have to chew. Worst part for me was the stitches irritated my mouth/gums (I had two impacted that had to be dug out).

I should note that while I haven't researched it extensively, there seems to be some debate as to the necessity to have the wisdom teeth removed, impacted or otherwise. If they don't bother you it's questionable whether you need them out.

I had mine extracted by an oral surgeon. I've heard people say go another route in regards who actually does the procedure, but it went fine.

The only problem I experienced was crazy swelling, my head looked like a basketball for about 5 days after. It was terrible.

My dad had them taken out the same year and had zero swelling, went to work fine the following day.

I am 61 and have all my wisdom teeth, as well as all the others. Have given me no trouble, and are some of the best teeth I have. They are tough to floss, but I have gotten used to it.

All my 4 children had theirs out, 4 at a time and all while they were under. Oldest when done was 19, youngest was 14 and her teeth were the most tighly packed(had two teeth more up front pulled out when she was about 7 - they came in fused together, probably from a bad fall she took on her mouth a couple years before they came in). The one at 14 had lots of problems tolerating the pain medicine. The one at 19 took no pain meds. The other two had no problems, but took a lot of their pain meds, with the only boy getting re-fill.

I had mine pulled. One of mine had the potential to get impacted, so they yanked them all. It was OK. They didn't give me cool drugs. I was fine after a few days.

Packing your mouth with gauze is really annoying, though.

Mine came out in the late 80's. USMC in Okinawa. One side, then the other 2 a few weeks later. Nothing but Novicane at the time and 500 mg of ibuprofen after. Not too bad, but the sound is awful!

Surgery is painless when going under. The pain comes when you dont take care of them. Wash the holes out well after each meal and just keep good oral hygiene for 10-14 days till they are healed and you will be good to go.

I've heard a lot of horror stories from people who've had this surgery. I had mine out early in high school and never had a problem with it. Have the procedure first thing in the morning, go home and sleep, feel miserable the rest of the day, be fine after that.

Looks like you are as tough as Sugartitz.

Glad I never had them. I'm a wuss when it comes to the teeth.

Havent had to mess with my wisdom teeth, yet. I have had my permanent front tooth chipped 3 times and ended up having to get a crown. First time I got shoved into a telephone pole, second time from back yard football, and third time my girlfriend head-butted me.Even though I was numbed, I could still kind of feel them drilling my tooth down.

I'm in the profession...and there is no real debate among dentists. While there are obvious reasons to remove wisdom teeth that are causing pain or problems, removing assymptomatic wisdom teeth becomes more of a cost/benefit/risk ratio analysis....and the benefits of having them out if the they are not going to be useful and have a high potential to cause later problems, usually far exceed the risks. Most certainly, if you have a question of the necessity of their removal, ask you dentist WHY he thinks you should have them out. Most reputable doctors should be able to answer that for you. You can also get a second opinion.
