Somehow I had never heard of Fracking until this week. Even watching previews of "promised land" - Had no idea what it was about.

I always thought we should be drilling as much as possible, but seeing what happens to people's water and the type of contamination that may or may not happen concerns me.

It seems people's complaints about the result of fracking is not being heard. Even if they completely made up the claims of what has happened to them, it should still be investigated.

Basically a bill was signed in 2005 that made fracking possible without needing regulation of the clean water act (or something like this)

Gasland is a documentary regarding Fracking. "Dick Cheney, Carcinogens, Water turning into fire"

Promised Land is a movie that portrays it as well.

The only question I pose is, if something could be harmful to people's water. Isn't it someone job to investigate or halt it until proven otherwise? Why would the burden of proof be on the person and not the company?

Okay - I'll google that and see what I find. Kinda weird they'd make a movie about it if it was a hoax. I didn't see a movie about the unstoppable Prius :)

The movie isn't particularly accurate. Fracking poses some risks, but they tend to be more along the lines of seismic issues, not groundwater contamination (the fluids are injected at different levels). I'm not saying it's harmless, as there is a risk with any sort of drilling operation, but fracking, as I understand it, doesn't pose huge environmental risks.

You could do this before fracking was even mainstream.

Yeah I saw on wikipedia it is not a new thing. I'm just hoping to hear the insights of those much smart than me, as I did not score close to the OC average of a 35 ACT score and I do not make the average income of $1,000,000 dollars per year like you all do.

And something that rarely gets pointed out.......we've been disposing of haz and non haz waste via deep well injection for years and that does not get near the attention fracking does

Why was the bill passed in 2005 to keep it out of the Clean water act's reach? That's another thing that befuddles this humble soul.

Fracking will save eastern Ohio and western PA economies over the next 40 yrs. The people against this are the jealous bastards who don't own land and aren't going to get rich.

I would be for it as well, but do think that you should have to be completely sure it's safe, and if there are complaints about safety that should be speedily looked into and noted. And if it's not safe it should be halted.

Fracking has been around the oil and gas industry since the 50s but its relatively new to this part of the country. TX, OK, ND, LA oil developers have been doing it for years and with a great safety record.

Kind of. What we call fracking today is specifically slickwater horizontal fracturing, and it was first tried about a decade ago. Forms of hydraulic fracturing have been around since the 50's in some manner though.

It's complicated and nuanced.

so you're directly crediting George Bush to come up with something complicated and nuanced? (this doesn't add anything to the topic, just thought it'd be funny)

My point was this aint the first rodeo for the O&G guys moving into the shale fields of OH, PA & WV. Tree Huggers trying to make mountains out of mole hills with the safety scares. The big bucks flowing into Appalachia will quiet that noise down quickly.

I know we speak in hyperbole but this doesn't seem like a political dilemma for all, so I'm sure even some republicans (gun lovin, obama hating, waiting on Bush III to come and save us good ole boys) could even have some caution when watching documentaries about claims of this not being safe. Even SOME republicans do care about humanity and safety of the citizens (even if it's frowned upon by the party)

I'm not sure money quieting down concerns is ever a good thing.

This is true. My dad is a surveyor and has worked around the oil industry for over 30 years in Ohio. He says it has been done here since he can remember but just not at the depths it is now. Drill baby, drill. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
