I guess the way I look at things is that if something that's completely wrong is going on somewhere and people were talking about it and trying not to let it be swept under the rug, I'd be more concerned about finding people who care enough to want to spread the word and not let the issue die quietly than I would be about determining just how pure those peoples' motives were.

If people want justice to be served and are willing to be vocal about it, I care more about the fact that they're trying to get justice served and less about exactly why they care. Whether it's pure altruism or there's a vested interest, at least they're not shrugging their shoulders and letting things get ignored and covered up.

On the other hand, one could also question the motives of someone whose main interaction with the discussion is basically to either go completely off-topic (bickering with a mod about how things are being modded) or to deflect the issue ("NO! What's important is how some vocal people don't like the Big Red and that's the reason they care!") to something meaningless in the grand scheme of things.
