Nancy Lanza told a babysitter to "never let Adam out of your sight". Now that is quite a warning to give a teenage babysitter in the first place. Also sounds like Mom liked to spend quite a bit of time at the local bar every night just to get away from her monster at home is my bet.

I don't think that seems like unreasonable request for a babysitter. Why would you not want them watching your kids? But I've heard so much crap lately that I don't even know what to believe anymore.

So, what did we learn from that article? That, like any parent, Nancy Lanza was proud of her sons and stopped into a local eatery two or three times a week for a carryout salad and maybe a glass of wine while she chatted with locals about her beloved Red Sox and offered to take care of tabs for anyone who might have needed a meal. Yep. She was a monster.

What I got from that article is everyone liked the mom and nobody knew the boy and they are trying to figure out why he did it. There's hardly any evidence of anything there.

I agree with this big time, and hope that out there nationwide there are parents with kids in similar situations who are evaluating whether they should have guns in the house.

If you have a child at home (or young adult in this case) who you think is a potential danger to others, no matter how well you think they're locked away you are asking for trouble having guns around they could get access to.

It won't stop the truly determined, but making them work a little harder for it might be enough to deter some that do it on an impulse. We know this kid tried to buy a gun, but didn't want to deal with the waiting period he ran into.

I've seen reports that this woman was doomsday prepper who believed that the economic collapse was right around the corner.

If she believes she's going to need assault weapons and hollow point bullets to defend herself in the aftermath any day now I'm not sure what you do when she's literally living out a paranoid fantasy.

It sounds like she might've had a tenuous grasp with reality herself...

Does anyone else notice that in horrible situations like this it almost seems natural to look for a way that the crazy person is different from us? It seems to me like many many people are trying to categorize the killer and his family in some category to separate themselves from anything to do with this. People who don't like guns want to blame guns even though the percentage of guns to mass murderers is very low. Other people try to blame violent video games even though there are millions of kids playing violent video games (and the only thing I know for sure is that he 'liked' a video game facebook page) and not very many of them turn into mass murderers. Some people are talking about cracking down on people with mental issues even though we don't really have a clear picture of his mental issues and there are many people with mental issues who don't go on killing sprees. I imagine if the killer had been non white or non christian people would be calling this a terrorist attack. I haven't heard it called it a terrorist attack, but it clearly was.

I think it's natural for us to separate ourselves as much as possible from anyone who would commit a crime as heinous as this. Why wouldn't we?

What difference does that make? You're attacking the interlocutor rather than the argument. So what if a person has never fired a gun? I was attached to a Seabee unit in the Navy Reserve and have plenty of experience with guns because of it. My opinion deserves no more weight than a casual observer who simply wants the mayhem to stop. And that's what it is...mayhem in the United States. You don't have to have handled a gun to see we've listened to the reasons for the need/right to have these weapons for years and it has failed miserably. This should be the last straw.
