I agree. Let's reduce the size of the general corps. We can start with our union thug-loving Commander-in-Chief.

If you got in there and cut-out the waste I bet at least a $100B wouldn't be missed.

The golf one is kinda dumb. Because while the military pays to build them on every base, you don't play for free. For my wife's rank (0-2), I pay $36 plus cart fee of $10. Take out the ocean views and its no different then courses back home.
Klipper on the marine base I pay about $50. Views on that course are incredible. But they're making money. You'll need to call almost 2 weeks ahead to get a tee time.

But the military does waste a ton of money, I can agree with that.

Military spending needs cut. Big time. It's pretty simple. Cut military spending by ~40% immediately. That would take us back to 2003 military spending (~$400b).

Maybe not IMMEDIATELY, but over 3-4 years I'd agree. $400B sounds about right, too.

And, in general, looking the other way on padded govt contracts, subsidies, etc.. is a huge problem for the military as well as those on the Hill.

The best way to appear as though you have balls without having to actually put your life at risk is to support absurd military spending. Unlikely Washington will touch it.

So let me get this straight...the golf courses are profitable because the enlisted people that we pay, provide housing for, etc...pay a decent fee and have the courses booked? So then one way to make them MORE profitable would be to raise the course prices and then pay our troops more?

Yeah. I meant start making cuts immediately and work down to $400b over the next couple years. I guess my first post doesn't really read that way.

If you don't have perks for a job that asks you to put your life on the line, then why would anyone join? There's sacrifices in being military too.

BUT I'll again leave a thread that's about military because I'm obv bias.

I'd rather the guys in Washington just walk around with their balls hanging out.

I don't know, maybe the money? The pensions? The free education? The free housing? I'm guessing they're not joining for the golf and ski lodge.

I don't think they are overpaid or anything. I'm just laughing at you claiming the courses are profitable when it's just money passed from one hand to another.

Yes there need to be cuts in the military budget. But with the whole sequestration thingy, the military is the only department that will actually experience real spending cuts next year. Every other department, agency, bureaucracy, etc., will only at best see reductions in the rate of automatic spending increases.

Add to that the fact that defense takes up 18% of the federal budget, and you can see why there's a whole lot of other things driving our deficits.

as people line up one after another to spit on the military with their knives so ready to cut away, maybe we should remember what is the most admired institution in our nation.
75% of american have a great deal or quite alot trust in the military
and who we have the least faith in, who scrapes the bottom
big business 21%
HMOs 19%
Congress 13%

Government spending will never decrease. That is, unless we get a new one and start over.

gosh a ruddies where have you been? We have a new gubmint headed by our first African American president who - in his infinite divine wisdom - will lead us into bliss, nirvana, and happiness. We need only trust that gubmint has an answer for all our social ills, surrender our freedoms & liberties to the benevolent state, and kiss his golden ring to earn our entitled place in the New Kingdom.

gosh a ruddies we are so lucky our first African American President made the personal sacrifice of deciding to run for a second term as our leader. Then the wise majority of American voters realizing how lucky we are to be lead by Barack Obama reelected him for a second term.
