I was wondering if these were the actual people, or just actors reenacting. Someone above said they actually met them though.

I dunno if they are actors or not. Could be real Mennonites/Amish but actors for the show?

They are real, see my earlier post.

They were going on and on about being in an up and coming reality show. We just brushed them off like "oooook guys."

Levi and his homie were in the back of my RV with us foggin the thing out. Coughing their heads off. They had one chick with them, she was the only "normal" one in the whole bunch. I think she was the only one that "got out"....lived in NC I believe. The rest were straight from Lancaster.

I watched the shows the other night.

Levi, Alvin, Alan (the black Amish man), and John are all Amish. Jolin is Mennonite. They claim the reason why they get away with what they do is because none were baptized into their respective religion -- Amish or Mennonite. So, since they were never baptized into the sect, the real members still recognize them but turn their backs on knowing anything that they do.

I am really familiar with Amish and Mennonite cultures. That's why I was sort of captivated by watching the show. Some of it was reenacted, some was actually filmed. They did put that disclaimer on the show.

How are you still considered Amish without being baptized Amish? I would have thought they had strict rules on that.

My guess is they were born into it -- except for Alan who was adopted -- but after rumspringa, didn't really go fully into the Amish (or Mennonite) community. After rumspringa, they are either baptized OR they leave. This would explain why Jolin has tattoos, during his rumspringa he went crazy.

You'd think they would have strict rules about it, but apparently their "protection" from the Amish Mafia outweighs their views on the whole ordeal. That's why the "real" Amish in the shows turn their backs on what the Mafia does. They don't really agree with it, but they enjoy the protection. The Mafia could eventually then be baptized and all their "sins" are washed away from their Mafia past.

Right. So if they chose not to go the Amish way, why are they still Amish? I think all of that is kind of weird.

Well, that is a bit weird...but, I'm sure Levi and Company have a logical explanation?

I figure it revolves around their connections with family, that way they can still be associated instead of excommunicated. Maybe it revolves around their ability to manipulate the government in regards to taxes and income/finances. But, maybe it's because they have the power and the Amish need the protection?
