for some professions i think its a very valuable way to network. i know a lot of people who have got extra business in the legal and tech fields thru linkedin. I also know a few folks who got a higher paying job in the same field from there.

Absolutely.
IMO LinkedIn and Indeed are the only legit job resources.
I got my current position and all interviews/leads in NYC via LinkedIn.

Depends heavily on the field you're in. I'm in Talent Acquisition at a Global pharmaceutical company and aside from our own company career site, LinkedIn is the only recruiting tool we use. But that's because there's a ton of IT, Legal, Operations Quality Assurance, etc.. type of folks on there that a company like mine looks for.

If you actively use the site, it is very helpful imo. When I was still searching for a way to leave Ohio, I actively networked with people on Linked-in (fraternity groups, alumni groups, etc), and I ended up getting a few interviews. I also got an interview by applying to a few jobs posted on their site.

I'll have to check it out. I started filling it out last night, but will give it a more serious look this evening.

I joined alumni/fraternity groups based out of cities. Once I got accepted to the group, I would post a message in the group about how I was looking to move to the city, and i was looking for a job in (insert career field). Asked if anyone could help me. I normally would get responses.dlazz;1339815 wrote:I'll have to check it out. I started filling it out last night, but will give it a more serious look this evening.

For my accounting jobs it hasn't done much. I think the accounting industry still uses head hunters more often because I get one of them calling every so often.
My girlfriend is in corporate retail though and gets recruited for various positions weekly. We started out in Kansas and she was recruited to come back to Columbus by Express, then The Limited recruited her and actually moved her up two promotions to hire her away. Now she gets offers in Texas, Florida, Chicago, New York, and Columbus weekly. Most are either for the next step up or her current position. I know this morning when she checked it she was recruited by American Eagle in Pittsburgh.
So basically I think it depends on your career field.

I've been casually browsing for jobs and wondering if it's worth it to upgrade to a "job seeker premium" account for a month or two.

Yeah I didn't think so for $30/month.
The only feature I'd be into is the salary filtering (which can be found elsewhere anyway). They really push the "inmail" feature. I don't get it....doesn't seem that great.

Looking for a job? Yes. In the recruiting field? Yes. I have not found it useful besides those 2 circumstances.

Depends on your job/industy/where you are in your career. Like I got one just to register my name/url so I'd have it but it wouldn't really make sense for me to use it right now as a student.

Judging by some of your posts, you'll need all the help you can get once you hit the real world.I Wear Pants;1340004 wrote:Depends on your job/industy/where you are in your career. Why wouldn't it make sense? Make connections and network. Explore future jobs and/or internships.I Wear Pants;1340004 wrote:Depends on your job/industy/where you are in your career. I agree. Use it as much as you can to establish relationships and build up your network. It will help when you start your job search.Automatik;1340015 wrote:Why wouldn't it make sense? Make connections and network. Explore future jobs and/or internships.

Unless I was grandfathered, you really don't need to pay anything for Linkedin. That's for the premium service, and I'm not sure how much that's worth. Maybe it helps if you don't have connections, but the point is mainly to get intros to people connected to others in your network.
I've also been able to view job postings, but haven't tried to apply to any. It's been a while, maybe they've changed their business model a bit.
