Same argument can be said about Tiger being named Athlete of the Decade. How hard is it to walk 18 holes AND have someone else carry your bag?
(Now Tiger may qualify for his EXTRA-curricular activities...)

AP=MASSIVE FAIL.
Its cool if you like NASCAR, but they are NOT athletes.
Actually, on second thought, I am wrong. It is NOT cool if you like NASCAR.

If David Ortiz is an athlete then so is Jimmie Johnson, et al.redfalcon wrote: AP=MASSIVE FAIL.

Sport n. 1. any recreational activity; specif., a game, competition, etc. requiring bodily exertion beyond the norm.
I don't know about you guys, but I drive my car effortlessly everyday.

You drive a car in 200 MPH, bumper to bumper traffic for 500 miles a day?GOONx19 wrote: Sport n. 1. any recreational activity; specif., a game, competition, etc. requiring bodily exertion beyond the norm.

Wait, your name says it all--you really are a goon.
Funny that you post that definition because NASCAR fits right in.

Show me bodily exertion.
I don't have a problem with NASCAR. It's a form of entertainment, and it succeeds at being one. But that's where it ends. I don't criticize you guys for watching. Hell, I've watch NASCAR multiple times. There is nothing you guys have said that proves it's a sport. If 200 MPH for 500 miles a day makes something a sport, then my pilot friend must be a sport god.

Nascar is a Physical activity, try driving a car at those speeds and tell me how hard it is to control it, how hard you have to work the steering wheel, and how much you have to pedal the throttle and brake, now keep that up for 3 or 4 hours. NASCAR drivers often lose up to 10 pounds in a single race. Nascar racing is governed by a set of rules and is engaged in competitively. It involves physical exertion and it involves skill & strategy.
So..go outside on a hot day..in a manual transmission car..find a track with 30 degree banking..take the power steering off that car..and drive it at 200 mph. Tell me how you feel when your done. I bet your opinion changes REAL fast after that.

That would be 2-3 G's they experience in every turn. If you think there is no bodily exertion needed to counter that force then you are obviously the strongest man on the planet.GOONx19 wrote: Show me bodily exertion.

I kinda agree with Goon.
If going 500 miles at 200mph with some g forces makes them athletes....then pilots must be superhuman.
What they do may be physically taxing, but when i think of the word "athlete" jimmy johnson and jeff gordon dont really come to mind first lol

Not a sport...
On the other Huddle I made this huge series of posts about how a sport has to have the concept of "hustle" that would help someone go faster. The idea of "hustle" is not of trying to take money from someone by downplaying your own skill, but rather the idea of "trying harder" or giving more effort. If hustling does not make one better at the sport than another... then it's not a sport.
This is not an all inclusive definition, but rather one of a few requirements I have.
In race car driving there is no hustle as far as I'm concerned. The limits are set by the car, not by the human will to push itself farther, harder, faster.
Nascar isn't a sport in my opinion.

LOL..nothing personal fly..but that could be the dumbest idea of a sport I've ever heard. LOL So golf isn't a sport? They don't 'hustle'. If you think you can't 'try harder' or 'give more effort' in NASCAR. Again..you are sadly mistaken.Fly4Fun wrote: Not a sport...

It's a requirement I think is necessary for something to be a sport in my opinion. And you are correct... it rules out golf. That's why I like it as a requirement. It rules out bowling, it rules out golf, it rules out poker, it rules out auto racing.GoChiefs wrote:LOL..nothing personal fly..but that could be the dumbest idea of a sport I've ever heard.
