Welcome to the club. We've been here for a good six years or so, sans one exception. It's not a fun place to be.
Speaking of, the Mogadore team of this year is not the tough, highly-talented team they've been in the past. But you wouldn't have known that watching them play Smithville.
Smithville has enough size to win games. They have enough talent as well.
They're pretty slow, but in the past, they've won plenty of games on 4-7 yards per play.
There are two glaring things I see in this team that trouble me a great deal:
1. They've shown ZERO killer instinct. Nobody seems to hate losing, even one play. Nobody plays mean. Nobody hits like then WANNA hit.
2. There is far less discipline than I'm used to seeing. Lots of arm tackling and over-pursuit. There have been about ELEVEN fumbles in the first two games. ELEVEN. Not joking. Not exaggerating. That's the real number. They've lost a fair number of them, which has exacerbated the score margins.
As it is, they've scored 20 points in two games. They've given up 97. One team warranted a lopsided score, as Loudonville is the real deal, and Smithville is young. Mogadore is not five touchdowns more talented than Smithville. Not close. But they were more disciplined, and they played meaner.
Until Smithville has a killer instinct back, and until they're passionately buying into the coaches' program, they won't be in close games. They'll win big against teams they're supposed to beat, and they'll get blown out by teams they're supposed to lose to.
