SEC Fans (The Truth)

I lived in the South last year. (most probably didn't know this)

I was employed in a place where there were about 10 avid SEC fans.

Some loved Alabama, Ole Miss, LSU, Arkansas and there was a Vandy fan as well.

I'm hear to tell you, this:

According to the each SEC fan (insert favorite team) they truly believe the following:

1) Alabama > Worst NFL Team

2) Worst SEC team would beat an above average team in Big 10, Pac 10, ACC, and would win the Big East

3) OSU beating ANYONE doesn't help OSU be a legit team (or make there schedule as tough as any SEC school), all other teams are inferior to SEC schools, so scheduling USC wouldn't matter, because they aren't "SEC Quality"

4) If you do happen to beat an SEC school, it's because they just didn't take you seriously (Utah), you were "lucky" (OSU vs Arky).

5) When asked who is good in the Big 10 they reply "No one except OSU but they are really overrated"

5) How about Wisconsin? "No" Michigan "Not anymore" Penn State "No" Nebraska "not anymore"

I wish I remembered more specifics but this was just what I gather in discussions.

The biggest difference is, I feel the North credits teams as being quality and legit, much more so than SEC schools do. They are very much more absolute in their views and have little wiggle room really to consider anything else to be the truth.

It's probably a cultural difference?

I agree I think that any SEC team would win the Big East.

There may be a couple of DIII schools that could win the Big East after the next round of conference consolidations.

Is the south flexible on any views? I mean they still fly confederate flags down there and have only been integrated for a few decades

Went to grad school in Maryland with three people from SEC schools (Georgia, Florida, and LSU).
I agree with the point and would add they know literally nothing about college football outside the south.
It was amazing how little they knew about say the Pac-10, or the Big Ten. Football didn't exist outside of the south.

Not too much to argue with in that statement quite frankly. All of those schools are shells of their former selves, even in years they are supposedly "good".

LOL. This was my thought as well. Are we really surprised that hillbillies in the South have narrow-minded viewpoints on anything?

As a recently transplanted "southerner", much of what you state is true, though the flying of the bars and stars seems to be relegated to the most ardent of rednecks. I'm in Charleston, SC and took a great pleasure from USCarolinas losses...questioning those fans on their teams lack of ability to get it done was immediatley met with a resounding thumping of chests in regard to the play of the SEC...comical.

You do realize that this thread has nothing to do with SEC football, just their fans? Some reading comprehension would do you well.

Do you see the word 'football' in my post? No. Must be that fine B1G edumacation you got. Just another example of you homers trying to spin my posts. You talk smack about the SEC. That would include fans, as in the second word of my post being the subject and topic of the thread.

I know some will call me a homer, but I think I have a unique perspective. Some background.
  • I was born and raised in Ohio. B1G country, surrounded by (mostly) OSU fans and the culture of sports in this area.
  • I'm a fan of an SEC school. I've been a fan since I was very little (3-5 years old, or when I could actually comprehend what sports were). My family never pressured me to root for someone specific and I had some influences to root for UK. I've been a supporter ever since.
  • I've attended both UK and OSU, made many friends in both locations and attended many sporting events in both B1G country and SEC country.
  • I've worked in Ohio most of my life, but interestingly enough, given my job and familiarity with the south and some of the culture, the bulk of my profession (insurance claims) has been in the south. Without getting into much detail, I'm mostly dealing with underwriting, claims investigation and fraud in the southern region (Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky and Florida) to be exact. I'm talking with residents of these states on a daily basis and while it's unfair to make sweeping generalizations, there's a clear contrast to this and the culture where I reside.
Lets just say that when it comes to overall football knowledge, the north is supreme. I'd agree that there is far more intelligence when it comes to the overall landscape and respect of the sport, the history and general knowledge. I'm not sure why this is, but I tend to think it comes with the rich history of tradition in this area, more focused on the sport overall and not just a specific conference or team.

In-terms of pride and passion, the south reigns supreme. Whether it's a positive or negative, the passion for their schools and even conference in the south is amazing. There is a much bigger focus on tradition and loyalty in many of these places. It also goes along with the fact that many of these areas have nothing else that commands their attention. Even the areas with professional teams don't compare, which is why I think it makes a ton of sense that many pro teams in the south struggle, especially those not in football. The fans of these teams tend to be major fair weather fans and will easily turn on the teams if they stink. For instance, I know far more people who are lifelong, loyal fans of the Reds, Browns, Lions, etc... (even teams that suck) than those who are lifelong fans of the Braves, Hawks, Saints, etc.

Lets just say that the culture is different in both areas, but this isn't a diss on either. Both regions have their share of absolutely sheltered and generally, less-intelligent and closed-minded fans. For purposes of this discussion however, I'd say a higher percentage of those in the south are also the ones who are connected to the "typical fan" as described in the initial post.

Was down in the south earlier this week and they enjoyed bashing the Big 10. They also thought that Meyer's retirement at Florida was more about Tebow being gone than about his health

Let me also add that some of the most intelligent and highly-educated fans of sports in-general that I know are Ohio State, Alabama, Michgan and Kentucky fans respectively. These four individuals I'm thinking of are also highly-intelligent people in other aspects as well. I think this is what people tend to forget when trying to dissect this stuff.

There are morons and homers everywhere. Instead of focusing on who they root for or what biases they have, if you can weed them out from the get-go, you're probably going to be better off.

I'm a Florida fan and I understand your opinion that because it says "Ohio" Chatter that only people that completely agree with you should invade your interweb message board. It'll be okay.

Just wondering why a Florida fan who lives in Florida would post on an Ohio message board. Seems like there is only one motivation. Now go back under your bridge and enjoy your 2nd rate rivalry game.

He should talk his smack while he can. League superiority is cyclical, and there's little argument IMO that the SEC has topped out and is slowly starting its downhill slide.
