Interesting, then by definition, if at anytime if any person gives you a dollar as a gift you should be taxes on it?

Money donated to churches are already taxed as income tax on the person donating the money.

If churches were making profits like corporations, then fine. However, since we don't tax corporations on their total revenue, just their profits, even if you tax churches the same as corporations their tax would still be $0. This is a fact since any church I have been a part of has been non-profit and every dollar gets used for the building/giving to the poor/etc.

Actually, it can be used to leverage against taxes, because donations, church donations included, can be deducted from your tax burden.

Personally, I don't think churches need changed, but I actually would prefer if giving to a church was not tax deductible (at least, if we're not going to change any other part of the tax system).

Aside from the Catholic church, and to some extent the Church of England, they make no money. The idea that taxing them is any type of solution for any problem is so stupid I wonder how this country even exists with citizens so dumb. My parents' church averages about 250 people per Sunday, and employs 4 people with only one full time - the pastor making around $50,000/year. Their bank account is around $300,000, and as jmog pointed out all money comes from donations on income that has ALREADY BEEN TAXED.

Only if you itemize, and if you are worth anything you aren't going to fake it. The vast majority of church-going Americans are likely under the itemization amount.

The gubmint confiscates 35% or more of our income already. God only requests 10% and does far more with it.

I don't want to get into this on a meme thread but churches should absolutely be taxed. They are businesses that sell a service and therefore should pay taxes like every other business out there. Maybe if churches had to play by the rules as everyone else, they'd have to charge for access to their cult. The logic of "Well the dollar has already been taxed by income" is absolutely retarded; I'd love to hear your thoughts on sales tax or buying any product. Why pay tax on that product when its already post tax dollars?

Honestly, the faster religion decays the better off society will be. I can't think of one good thing religion has done for society.

Religion perhaps. Jesus Christ, on the other hand, sacrificed his life for us. I can't think of anything more positive than that.

"I don't want to get into this on a meme thread but churches should absolutely be taxed."

Based on what? What is the tax focused on? Income (from donations that have already been taxed), real estate (which is worthless for endeavors other than church practices), investments (again only the Catholic Church and the Church of England have significant equity holdings)?

For the same reason dentists have to pay a tax on their earnings. The money being "donated" to the dentist in exchange for services has already been taxed once; your logic is flawed.

What services are being produced? So if my parents want to spend their AFTER-TAX donations for charity it should be taxed again? If you want to donate to a 501(c)(3) charity that provides for free dentistry, you can be my guest. It isn't a for-profit endeavor.
