The storm won't be the problem - the loss of power to large areas of populated areas will, especially if it turns cold afterward.

My trip to Connecticut for this week has been cancelled - no flights operating..

Calm before the storm right now. I just took a stroll near the East River, I live close. It's creepy out there, swirling/howling winds and it's a ghost town. Shit is about to go downnnn in a few hours. I believe the eye will reach land around noon.

It's funny watching all of you guys act tough and saying this storm is no big deal and losing power. From what I've read, it's gaining momentum and they're calling it a historic storm (on the day it is supposed to hit).

I hope none of you there who are acting like "no big deal, don't die.

I live in a basement apartment and I'm not in an evacuation zone. Just gotta ride it out.

Pretty nasty here in Brooklyn Heights, rainy and winds are really picking up (I am not meteorologist, but the winds look stronger than Irene). I am hearing Battery Park (lower Manhattan, just south of the WTC) may be under water in a few hours, that's nuts!

Max sustained winds this AM of 90mph with gusts up to 115mph as of this morning. Stay safe, east coasters.

Auto
My son is in a first floor apartment and we've been worried about him. We'll keep our fingers crossed for you in your basement apt.
He was at a conference last week in Chicago and left his car at work(He works in Whitestone) he's hoping it will still be there tomorrow.

Good luck!!

As long as he's not in a low lying area he should be fine, although I'm not familiar w/ Whitestone. I don't think it was in Zone A.

People in the Rockaways, lower Manhattan, and Redhook, BK all need to gtfo out.

It's rainy all day so far some decent wind maybe 20 mph but by 5-6 we will have winds 35-45 with gusts around 70. It's already starting to flood on the roads and such.

Love that picture at Arlington.

Not too bad now in upper DC. But, main front is coming late tonight.

Yes they are volunteers and after training receive the second least awarded decoration in the military and they don't wear rank insignia so as not to out rank the unknown soldiers.

We were there last summer and sat through a changing of the guard, and it one of the neatest things I've ever witnessed--it was surreal, to say the least.
