But yeah, it's more about fundraising than "awareness" now, but there's nothing wrong with that IMO

The awareness is getting women to get mamograms and do self breast exams, ie early detection. Not a huge fan of Koman, but they do alot more than just cancer research. They have many programs for women going through treatment (Look Good/Feel Better, wigs, etc.). My sister had breast cancer 13 years ago, so we started raising money for Race for the Cure. After research we have since switched to Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society.

And as far as the NFL only donating 5% of profits, do you realize that every flippin' jr high and high school football player in the United States is sporting at least one pink item? I'm sure it's more $$ than it seems.

Anyway, sorry to be so serious. Back to your mature convo about tits, v-jays and balls. ;)

Many if not most of those articles are not affiliated organizations that donate to the cause. They are simply other companies parlaying off of the fad and profiting from it with increased sales of their own articles....that just happen to be made in pink.

Dick's had all their pink football stuff on one display. The NFL, Nike and UnderArmor all were clearly marked that proceeds to Koman. There was quite a bit of other stuff that had nothing on it. :( I didn't buy that crap. Although that crap was a whole lot cheaper than the NFL, Nike and UA crap.

You could accomplish your goal by buying the other "crap" to raise awareness and then donate directly to the American Cancer society an amount lower than 5% equivalent profit of an NFL, Nike, UA product and still spend less money.

The biggest complaint is that a small-ish proportion of the money they raise goes directly to their cause (that is, finding a cure for breast cancer). A large proportion - larger than many charities - goes toward administrative and marketing costs. The 3-days, 10k's, walks and other things don't just organize themselves - Komen has to pay for them. And, as a trade off, contributes less to the actual science-y stuff that could find better treatments for the disease.

Most of their money is spent promoting their own foundation and padding their employees wallets. Very little is actually spent doing anything positive.

Yeah, I could have bought the cheaper crap, but if you have kids, you know they want the crap with the swoosh on it. ;) (So sue me, I have spoiled kids.)

And FYI Sleeper, I (and most women I know) do take care of ourselves. But unfortunately there is a large percentage of women out there who for some reason need to be reminded or get it done for free. (I think it's about 47%.)

If you wanted the swoosh it makes sense to buy it. No need to justify it other than it's your money and that's what you wanted. We were discussing the money which was donated. That doesn't seem to be a reason to buy a certain "brand".

Still, it even depends on how it's spent by the SGK Foundation.

I actually side with sleeper on "awareness" campaigns. It's code for "fundraising for advertising."

And one of their causes is indeed breast cancer. The difference is that they are up front about saying that a specific number sold pays for a mammogram.
