How many of you out there had career changes at any point during your working career? If so, what did you change from/to? Did it work out for you?

I'm getting to the point where I really don't want to do what I do anymore. It pays well but not so well that I'd be crazy to change careers. That said, I have no idea wtf I'd switch to. Something that doesn't involve sitting at a desk all day would be a start, I guess.

Become a consultant and then you can spend 8-10 hrs a week traveling to sit at a client's desk :p Granted, you'll still be sitting at a desk upwards of 60 hours a week.

I went from credit/collections/repo man to executive recruiter. Going on 20 years later, it's worked out very well.

If I can give any piece of advice, at your age, do what you love if you know what that is and can make money doing it.

I love baseball. I might try out for CF for the Reds. :p

But seriously, if I could find a way to monetize my love for baseball I would do it in a heartbeat.

Well,
I have changed before... 1989. Decided I did not want to own the family business that had been around since 1925. Simply didn,t interest me enough to do my whole life. I got involved in the sport that I have been passionate about my whole life. Love most of the job, but the hours are difficult on my family life. Ready to look at options myself... still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up at age 51 :)

Also, I'm surprised no one has made a comment on how being unemployed isn't a career.

I have changed a few times but keep doing the one that makes me the most money. I started doing plumbing about 17 years ago. I got my cdl and took two years off to travel the US. I drove for a place that allowed for me to have the weekends off. I had a great time doing that. I then decided sitting behind a wheel 11 hours a day was not for me so went back to plumbing. I done this up until my father had his stroke and heart attack and had to move in with him to help take care of him. I took a job at a warehouse doing maintenance and really liked the job. Was let go this past february and been taking classes to get certified in electric and hvac. I have never stopped plumbing/construction type work. I just need a consistent job so once I get my certifications will be looking for another maintenance job.

No, not really. It was a small hardware store that was going to be a difficult business to grow going forward with all of the megabox stores coming, etc.

No regrets. Just the expected sentimental issues.

If you can break the anchor of steady employment and a guaranteed check you can literally do almost anything you want going into business yourself. You can't be stupid about it, but if you look around there are a lot of people either self-employed or have just a few employees that found a niche.

Take a look at your skills and interests, and then decide how you can create value that would prompt someone to pay you for your service or product. But you have to be truly passionate about what you do. And if working more than 40 hours a week is unappealing to you, then don't plan on going on your own.

If i didn't have student loan debt I'd go to school and learn how to be a mechanic and the get certified to work on german cars.

i know a guy who does graphic design for mlb.com . its pretty cool i guess

Im considering getting my masters and going back to the etta to teach. Not a change in career but a change in job scope.

I changed careers from a waiter at Tumbleweed to Construction Management when I was in college.

Someday's I wish I were still waiting tables and banging waitresses in the cooler.
